Re: Should the Big 3 get a bail out?

i'm from the UK and i think no. i dont even think the banks should have been bailed out. lets face it, the system doesn't work anymore. there is now so much debt around that it cannot be repaid. the bailout is throwing good money after bad.

there is a deep sickness affecting the world. as said above, everyone expects to be bailed out for their mistakes and no one takes responsibility. However, if things are going well then they expect to keep all the profit for themselves. the USA, UK and others are not even democracies anymore - they are Corporate socialist states run for the benefit of a minority of the rich population and companies.

It makes me sick. these companies are churning out cr*p cars that no one wants. in capitalism, they should fail and be replaced by a company making good cars that people want to buy.

No!!! These companies have been mis-managed for a number of years now. They brought this upon themselves. Here we are the taxpayers first bailing out the whiteshirts on Wall Street, then the automakers. Who's next? I don't want to see all of those people lose their jobs, but something drastic has got to be done. Not just in the auto industry but to our country as a whole! No I don't have an easy solution but this problem with our economy isn't going to be solved overnight. I feel that we are headed for another depression. It's gonna get worse before it gets better my friends. But to re-iterate No. The auto industry shouldn't get a band-aid type fix. Because it is hemmoraging It's beyond a quick fix.

Yes, if somethign was to happen to them. People will loose there jobs. People who working will not retired with enough money to keep them straight. Then Cost of Cars prolly goes up. It will effect every one not just Big 3.

Next thing you know if they dont get bailout. they may let people go and take all of the jobs over seas where its cheaper. And we dont need that. Just like Wallstreet effecting us if they didnt get the ballout. not bailing out Big 3 will hurt us also in the long run.

Thats what they want; to move overseas. They count on not getting bailed out. As for bailing them so people don't lose their jobs; sure that is a legitamate concern but what happens when they get bailed and people get laid off anyways. If they file bankruptcy; that doesn't mean that everyone will be losing their jobs. It means that management will actually have to run a more streamline company. Get rid of the unions and produce something that the public would prefer to have. They don't dissappear; someone may buy them and do what they haven't done for the past 20 years. Just keep the govt out and things should work out for the best. The gov't is forcing companies to move overseas anyways and have been for the past 20 years. The outrageous capital gains and corporate taxes have forced them to move. Where would you set up shop? Somewhere where taxes are 35% or where its between 5 and 11%. I chose the later.

Nope. It's time we all realized that the US does not have a comparative advantage in the production of automobiles and begins to move on to other things.

reliability is one aspect you consider before buying a car, old skodas were incredibly hardy cars - that doesn't mean you'd want to buy one though. Overall these company's have been producing cars people do not want to buy...

Re: Should the Big 3 get a bail out?

First thing that they need to do in bankruptcy, is to get ride of the stupid Union.

I think that the car makers are forgetting that they are employing the Union, not the Union employing the car maker. If a Union worker doesn't like that the Union is getting kicked out, either they work under new conditions, or they get fired. It will be extremely easy for the Big 3 to find new employees fast, and do it under their terms, conditions and rules.

I don't get the UAW anyways. They suck the life out of these companies (money) but don't even get job security. Every year there is something going on, threatening their jobs. I would not be able to work day to day all my life wondering if I will have a job or not.
Plant closings, strikes, production cuts, weeks off at a time from over stock, complete shifts eliminated, ect. ect.
This Union even puts suppliers out of work who are not in Unions.

I had much rather take a pay cut, and benefits cut, just to guarantee me a job for the rest of my life.
