On my desktop that I use for gaming, photo's, music etc I don't have any desktop icons although I do have Objectdock.
On my laptop that is mainly used for work I have about thirty icon's as I find it quicker when working.
I have only my vehicle diagnostic Icons on my desktop.

Strangely though I'm not to happy with them being there but its about accessibility
Just the recycle bin. Everything else in on the rocketdock or sidebar.

18 icons on my desktop at the moment.
Mind you, I don't have them bunched on the left hand side. I have the vista sidebar on the right with the icons around the edge of the desktop. Looks tidy in my eyes, and still functional.
Just a couple of icons... 5 or 6 maybe... can't remember (not at home atm).
But I might just move one or the other to quicklaunch ideed. That's where I got the most important apps anyway.
That's me too, I delete them or move them when I get chance but I do prefer it clean and clear.
Just 1, the recycling bin.
Quick launch is all i need.
