Well after messing about with every possible config, I'm pretty certain now that the engine's tick/frame issue rate is capped to 60 or so fps. It's funny how just has simple and cute the graphics tests are:
20 seconds! The total polygon counts were big for 1999 but you get more than that in a single character model for Crysis
. The best bit has to be the texture load - awww, less than 5MiB. Swwweeeeet!
