There's really two levels of support, but Microsoft almost refuses to clearly identify this to the end user; essentially, if you see the phrase "DirectX 9 compatible" it just means that the drivers work with DirectX 9. The hardware will still need to have some basic level of physical support but at the least it needs to be "fixed function rendering" (sometimes called hardware TnL). If you see "DirectX 9
compliant" then that's supposed to mean a minimum of SM2.0 physical support... I say "supposed" to because even Microsoft gets it wrong. On the back of my UK retail box for Flight Simulator X it says "DirectX 9 compliant"!
