What's on your desktop? images and tips.

Call it a pet peeve..call me over meticulous. I am doing this out of curiosity and to offer advice for those unhappy with their desktop. It makes me crazy to see a desktop with 100 icons on it give or take some.
I am sure some of you ...well most of you may already know some of the things I have done but I am sure there is some who don't. Has anyone ever told you something you can do on your PC and you say "cool!"? Well here is a few things I have learned and maybe some of you can share some other cool stuff to. I for 1 do not really like playing with the menu.

The first thing is I make a few folders on my desktop and organize it accordingly. Game icons in the game folder, utilities in the utilities folder ect.

Some may say. I don't want a bunch of yellow folders on my desktop. I didn't either. Here is the coolest part. I do not like most of the ones microsoft gives us so a friend told me how to make my own icons out of a JPEG image. I guess we all learn what we know someware.

    1) Decide what kind of Icon you want to replace your yellow folder with and google it up. A gun..a star..or the Creature from the Black Lagoon like I did and right click on the picture and save it as a JPEG.

    2) Open the picture you saved with paint and re-save it as a 24bit-Bitmap
and in the file name add .ico to whatever you name the picture you opened with paint.

    3) Now right click on the ugly yellow folder and go to properties> customize> change icon,(find the icon you just made) then apply.

Now the folder looks like you want it to. This does not work on everything
but will work most of the time. Some times you end up with a crappy looking icon. Just keep trying untill you get one that works. I just built this PC so you won't see much customization yet but as the icons grow so will the custimizing.

    Happy Computing :)

Why is it a problem? the desktop is usually covered by whatever else is going on

Like I said..it is a meticulous thing. If you don't mind looking at lots of icons do to what you want to do it won't bother you. I have seen some people fire up their PC and spent 5 minuits looking for this or that. I'm just being anal. I spend at least 8 to 15 hours a day on one PC or another doing many things. I for one like to be organized when it comes to something that consumes so much of my time. I also wanted to offer some advice on customizing ones icons. Simple as that. :)

I personally think your desktop is rather un original and not well thought out in terms of ease of access.

    Desktop

    and laptop

but equally my desktop may look bland and shite compared to others but for me its all about fuctionality

I dont like Icons on the desktop but I use my laptop for diagnostics and tuning for my car so I decided to have icons there

the desktop bar auto hides when not in use, some people have asked me if it was linux but Its MCE 05

Then offer up some advice. Like I said. I just built this PC. It is a work in progress. That is what this thread is all about. We all have our preferences hence the name Personal Computer. Looks great ! What programs are you using ? And OS ? A friend of mine told me about these things called widgets for Macs but they work on other OSs..I think that is how its spelled. Looks like you may be using some. Are you?

the theme is called minimal but you will have a hard time finding it but if you want it ill give it to you but you cant have my sysmetrix skin because ive put a lot of work into it to make it unique to me.

It's all good. I like seeing what other people are doing. Sounds like you really know your stuff. Much more than I.
