Freecom 500GB External HDD
I needed to pick up a second, larger capacity external HDD, and this one seemed to be the best combination of size/price/design.
First impressions
Solid design. The case is brushed aluminium, which also acts as a heatsink for the HDD, meaning that this unit is fanless, and therefore very quiet. The blue "500GB" indicator on the front is also the HDD activity light - it lights up blue when in use.
As a standard it came with both UK and European plug connectors - which I was very impressed with. I have my UK surge protector multiplug with me in Holland, and it was great to be able to plug this HDD straight into that.
Usage
Very quiet, and fast. I've not benchmarked it, but its certainly faster than the other (older) external HDD that I have. The unit contains a 3.5in 7200rpm drive (not sure of the make).
Connection is via USB 2.0 (1.1 compatible). XP picks it up fine without the need to install any drivers or other software.
It does get quiet hot during sustained usage (I needed to copy 180gb across to it, which took a while!) - but that is normal, as the case is acting as the heatsink for the drive.
Overall I have to say I'm very impressed with this unit. Its compact, sleek, stylish, and does everything it should. [thumbup]
