May I propose that we eliminate a number of boards and create a new one?
Wasn't Other Hardware supposed to be for everything about the computer that wasn't a GPU or CPU/Mobo? I think that was the initial idea, but then users cried for separate boards. We have the Modding/Cooling board, and the Console Hardware board. How busy are these boards, though?
GPU board - 3,619 threads, and 47,960 posts
CPU/Mobo board - 3,896 threads and 40,763 posts
Other Hardware - 4,220 threads and 31,338 posts
Modding/Cooling - 539 threads and 5,498 posts
Console Hardware - 1,428 threads and 25,613 posts
For the sake of this argument, I contend that thread-count, as opposed to post-count is a better indication of how "busy" a board is. The GPU and CPU boards are more prone to fanboyistic replies that bloat the board's post-count.
The Other Hardware board is the busiest Tech board on Futuremark because it encompasses the most topics - too many, if you ask me. It seems everyone on the planet has a cell phone, laptop, gameboy or iPod in their hand all day long. Futuremark even has a benchmark for portable devices, yet there is no Mobile Devices board. It gets shoved into Other Hardware. Questions about home theatres are frequent on Futuremark, yet they often appear in GD because they don't fit the tagline for Other Hardware (Memory, hard disks, CD/DVD-ROMs, monitors, sound cards, speakers, keyboards, mice...). Topics about R/C toys also appear in GD because they don't fit any other board.
I propose the Other Hardware board be reclassified as a Computer-Related Other Hardware board. The Cooling/Modding board should then go. It's underused. There are only 5 new topics in the past 4 days! Put the Cooling/Modding topics back into a revamped Computer-Related Other Hardware board.
I then propose a new board be created: non-Computer Related Hardware. Futuremark is more than PCs, and Onions want to discuss more than PC hardware. Start by tossing Console Hardware into this board, and encourage its use for topics on mobile devices.
If this makes sense, we'd go from this:
Other Hardware - 4,220 threads
Modding/Cooling - 539 threads
Console Hardware - 1,428 threads
To something like this:
Computer-Related Other Hardware - 4,000-4,500 threads (everything in your tower or on your desk)
non-Computer-Related Hardware - 2,000ish threads (consoles, phones, A/V players, home theatres, toys etc...)
There's nothing new under the sun with Other Hardware. Computers have RAM, HDDs, monitors, mice, and printers, the same as yesterday and 5 years ago. It's not really a board that's growing with new ideas.
Give birth to a non-Computer-Related Hardware board, and let's see how it grows.
