    NTLDR missing

    I was having some pc trouble last night and decided to format my hd and reinstall windows. I did so like I've done a billion times before. But this time the weirdest thing happens. I can not log in to windows and I get the NTLDR is missing error unless I have a cd/dvd drive set as first boot option and the win xp cd-rom in it.

    I tried repairing windows and reformating but still I got the sam error. I am at a complete loss. Is there any way to fix this?

    Re: NTLDR missing

    Whats your boot.ini look like?

    Should look something like;

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    The file sits in the root of your C:\ you will need to unhide hidden files and show windows protected files.

    Re: NTLDR missing

    That's how it looks like:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    I have 2 hd's. C: is sata and I use it for data storage and D: is ide and that's the one with windows in it.

    EDIT:

    WTF... NTDLR, boot.ini, ntdetect, autoexec, io and config files do not exist in the root of D: (windows installed there) but in the root of C:...
    HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE???
    Will it work if I just copy and paste them in D:?

    ok,

    if you go into device manager, disk drives. Go to properties of the sata drive under general it will state drive location i.e. location 0 (0) this needs to be the same as whats stated in the boot ini.

    so if it states 0 (0) under the sata drive this needs to be;

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    rather than

    boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    I think Windows installs to C: by default. Redo the istallation with your SATA drive disconected.

    Re: NTLDR missing

    Its deffo boot ini related, its looking for the windows files but canny find em, i missread you need to find location of the ide drive and set that as the location.

    If that doesnt work try this;

    to fix it:
    u should boot up with windows xp pro

    go to repair windows then go recovery console from cd rom
    now u'r in dos mode:
    if u'r cd rom drive is d: and u'r hard disk is c:

    just type this:
    ******************************
    c:\copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
    c:\copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

    ******************************
    after copy is done...remove cd and reboot computer
    u'r pc will restart and everything should work fine
