Re: Would you test for and terminate a pregnancy because of a disability?

Obviously it depends on the severity of the disability and really on the views of the parents but I personally think it would be okay to terminate especially if it means you have another shot at having a baby that is not disabled. As people usually have a set number of children is it really morally better to have 2 normal children and a disabled one rather than 2 normal children an abortion and another normal child. If all life is equal then both outcomes are equivalent although I think most would agree the end result of the latter situation is preferable.
If all your children would be disabled then well that comes down to the parents I suppose...

I think it's sad that you see a "retarded" person simply as a burden. There are worse things in life than being retarded, like being an ********.
Ok. Let's try mentally retartded then. I didn't realise I had to be so specific. I thought you would be able to read between the lines and maybe figure that one out all on your own. After all you want be killing yourself for needing to wear glasses as that isn't your biggest problem....

Curious, what's your definition of "mentally retartded?" Is it based off an IQ Test Score? Is it based off one's ability to care for others? Does it include someone that can't spell mentally retarded?

What's your definition of achieving whatever you want? I know I am not able to achieve whatever I want, but I'm not considered "mentally retartded."

I don't understand your argument for giving all your attention to the wrong one. Are you saying it's better to spend all your time on the "normal" kids? Or are you saying a parent won't be able to properly care for all the children?

You seem to have a eugenics mentality. Am I sensing that correctly?

I'll ask you the same question. What is a great life? Is it having a job that pays well? Is it having a job that you enjoy? Is it having a family that will love you and care for you no matter what? What is a great life?

great life= decent job, healthy no big troubles. decent love life
horrible life, wel myself as example=no job or horrible jobs, litte cash, bad health no bright future(unless i win the lotery) horrible love life.

That why, if i ever have a kid, i want him to have a far better life, if i can prevent it from a missbrle life and or painfull life then i will.

Not planning to get any kid's in this lifetime[rofl]

Down syndrome is a disability but doesn't imply per se that the person won't have a happy life, but if instead of Down it has a desease which will cause it to suffer from chronic pain for which nothing can be done and when it's safe to say it will cause the person to not be able to enjoy living then that is a disability I would terminate. You see the diffrence I hope. If the semantics made it very clear that the definition of 'disability' is being unable to enjoy life then I would vote yes, but since I can't read that in the poll I can't vote yes. Quality of life is the deciding factor in my reasoning.
Why is everyone stuck on Down syndrome???? The poll says nothing about the disablity being that. I may be wrong, but i thought that was just an example the original poster was making???

Cause I believe, if something like this was actually implemented in life, i dont think down syndrome would or should be a bad enough "disablity" for it to be legal to terminate.

From what you have been saying in this post you show that you are a very shallow person....how can you say that a disabled person couldnt have a better life than you have right now? Who says they would be in pain? I know tons of disabled persons. I know none of them that would rather die than to have lived their life the way it was. Life is not about getting rich and having all the money....it isnt about physical posessions......I am in no means a rich person monetary but my friends are what counts the most. I know that if I went flat broke tomorrow and didnt have a place to stay that I would have a dozen people that would be willing to help me in a heart beat. What that disabled person could do for others would be worth way more than all the money in the world, maybe he could encourage people give, them a reason to live a better life. When you die would you rather people say that you were a very wealthy person and had tons of money or would you rather them say hey he was the most helpfull person and caring anyone has ever seen. You reap what you sow and if all you care about is having money then your friends are not worth much......

as i said physical health for me importent even if i do not have lots of it, for me most importent thing is if i ever be crazy enough to get a kid, then i want him to have a far healther and more social life then me if anything durring pregnancy would make that impossible i would choose to terminate pregnancy if the choice was up to me, as i am a guy the choice would not be up to me, as i am not the one who gets pregnant.

wish we could all trow away that mony nonsense but it doesend work like that, life is 1 big unfair community, anyone u could save from joining that community is a happy soul[rofl]

Re: Would you test for and terminate a pregnancy because of a disability?

First of all guys, this is a matter of opinion thread. No need to throw rocks at eachother. Just because someone thinks it would be better to terminate the pregnancy doesn't mean that they're a bad person, from their point of view it would be less painful for themselves and those around them and most importantly above all else, the child. Cerebral palsy, mental retardation, deformation, no matter what birth defect it is, it will ultimately take away from the experience of life and can lead to some incredibly cruel life events. Then there are others who believe each life is important and who knows? Maybe that child will have a really cool life regardless of their handicap. One experience differs from another and Stephen Hawking is an excellent example of a positive life experience.

It's a tough issue and I don't care who you are but you can't force someone to agree with you. State your opinion and be done with it.

As for what I would do, I would vote yes, there's just too much cruelty out there and there's no telling how bad the defect will be, so why risk my child getting hurt?

I think everyone wants their children to have a better life than they had, but does not having a better life mean the parents and child failed? Does a child only have value if it is able to have a better life?

Let's make up a very hypothetical situation. You are a very smart person with a great job (it either pays well or you enjoy the work) and love life (you're either happily married or a player). You have tested your kid and found he will have a slightly below average intelligence and a terrible love life for various reasons. Do you then terminate the pregnancy because he'll never have a life "half" as good as yours?
