How do you tell if canned food is spoiled?

I was just getting ready to make some spaghetti sauce, and as I opened the can of tomato paste, a jet of the paste squirted out at high pressure. It shot a good 10 ft.

Is this a sign of spoilage?

I thought canned foods only spoil if the seal is broken. In this case, the seal must've been in place for the can to have such high pressure.

The tomato paste smells ok. But I don't want to die from botulism.

    Should I eat it?

High pressure inside a food can is generally not good news...don't be cheap over a can, just throw it away and get some fresh food, the consequences can be bad...

when I open canned foods (baked beans, sweet corn, soup), there is some minor pressure release but never has any food actually squirted out.

Isn't there a use by date on the can?

Nope, no use by or expiration date on the can.

I threw it away anyways. It's not worth risking death over a can of tomato paste.[surrender]

I ended up opening a 1 gallon can, Now I have to find a way to use the rest.

I think I'm going to be eating spaghetti for the next two months.

I am pretty sure it was bad. Always check for bulging of the top and bottom when opening a can and for any discoloration inside of either the contents or the can itself.

If you have some plastic bowls or storage bags you can freeze the rest of that tomato paste until you can use it up. Or even go ahead and make your sauce or some chili and freeze it and it will be a quick to fix dinner on a busy night.

i used to be an executive chef and manage kitchens, so i would attend seminars on food safety and whatnot. In the case of canned goods, you can pretty much tell straight away if they are spoiled. It will smell absolutely terrible. Botulsim(sp?) is something you can tell right away. I doubt that can is spoiled, you would know it. Pressure is not that crazy for canned goods, it's air sealed. I've had stuff spray from vaacuum packed goods and canned goods. Basically, if it was spoilt in any way, it would be 100% nasty. Like in the case of a dented can when the seal was lost. can goods spoil either 100% or 0 % afaik.

ive eaten from ration packs (4 man 24hr) and they had tins on sausages in them covered in fat dated from the 80's.

even the newish boil in the bag rations were dated from the 90's.

god i hate those brown crackers and the "catfood" patte, and the mars bars that were whiter than a 18mth old dog turd left out in the sun.

chocolate porrage oats was awesome though even if it was like eating freshly laid tarmac.

thing with tins is that the contents is pasturised then its vacuum sealed so if theres any bacteria in there they will most likely be dead or as we were told is to boil em as much as posible and eat them as quick as possible because some bacteria can become active again.

ive never been ill on ration packs. just havent had the ability of taking a dump for like weeks after but when it comes its a u bend blocker !

If it smells like crap don't eat it... or if the can is bloated.
