it's a pretty good deal actually. Not that this chip is an awesome performer but if you like Intel chipsets (i do) and you're looking to build some kind of HTPC maybe than this is a good choice,

Any idea how much of a performance increase I'd see over my Clawhammer 3700+?

yea, its a pretty good cpu but u can get a pentium d 930 for $200, and it can also do 4 ghz, but with higher fsb and more cache....and most importantly, it runs cool cause its 65nm.
btw, the budget board to go with this budget cpu would be the asus p5ld2

Not much. Keep in mind this is a 533MHZ CPU so in order to get those overclocks you will have to use 667MHZ or 800MHZ DDR2 which is expensive{unless you just want to buy 1 gig which in my eyes is a waste} and also buy a motherboard that will do those speeds stable. I have one and if I would have done it over I would have bought a more recent chipset{I got one with the 945 in it} and higher speed ram. The latencies are like twice what DDR is on ram at those higher speeds. It was almost a lateral move for me coming from a 3500. The 805d does have more L2 cache than the venice core I had. I wanted to try a dual core chip and this was a cheap alternative to the AMD versions. Might be awesome in vista but as of now it's kind of a waste. Oh well more parts for the kids when they get past the"Break everything they touch" phase.

I really hate being a "Junior firefly" ....that is TOTALLY lame in my eyes. Older ratings sounded better. I had just made Junior Pro and now I'm this???? Kind of unproffesional sounding....

it can still run 533mhz ram frequency at 4ghz cpu frequency....
and ddr2 overclocks good anyway, just get 2gb of any value ram would be my advise, it will probably run at 667 even though its rated for 533

Budget board? 110.99 on newegg and it uses DDR2. Maybe for some people that's budget, but that breaks the bank for me.

Does anyone have any experience with the ASUS P5RD1-VM, it's an ATI Xpress 200 board that uses DDR 400 memory. It's also suppose to be capable of running Pentium D's. I've been looking at it but I'd love to hear other people's experiences before buying it.

yea, its the cheapest board that would work well with this cpu
boards with nforce 4 chipsets are cheaper, but they have too many problems i hear

Easy there, I was trying to give a balanced reply Alot of people blindly recommend other brands for reasons only pertaining to their own loyalty to that brand.

Bah that is what you get when u listen to the reviewers at newegg... I just upgraded my rig about 2 monthes ago and allmost went with the pentium D but the reviewers acted liek they were just ok cpu's [cursing]

I might sell some stuff and get one of these. wish i could find a decent ocing mobo that uses ddr1 ram so i just had to get cpu and mobo.
