    Conroe / AM2 tests?

    Hi there,

i saw that someone was testing the conroe processor with HL2 but are there actually any sites with samples yet who did a comparison between the new stuff?

Forum posts tend to go in the conroe direction mostly

Not AFAIK, but A64 vs AM2 A64 tests show around 0-5% difference at max IIRC, so you can do the maths yourself.

if its only 5% then i dont see what the big deal is about releasing a new socket right now.....why not just stick with the 939/940 of today and change things when the performance can be higher?

These processors will sure as hell be expensive...but why would someone buy them for such a low performance boost?

mainly for the switch to DDR2, later AMD will be releasing better and different CPUs on AM2 platform, hopefully that socket will be around 2-3 years at least

Correct both AM2 and Conroe use DDR2 memory. There are also current motherboards available for LGA775 that can use DDR2 memory

Actually those LGA775 motherboards that can use DDR are quite rare, so it's quite safe to say that most LGA775 mobos use DDR2

But only latest revision of Intel's i975X mobo support Conroes so far
