Heart question: Sporadic rapid heart beat.

Before this thread gets started I have to first say: Yes, I am going to the doctor. My appointment is Monday morning.

Over the past few weeks (3 or so), my heart has been acting very very strange. At random it will begin to beat extremely fast. I don't mean just a simple increased heart rate like I had just run up some stairs. I mean heavy heard beating out of your chest. Sometimes it will cause an instant shortness of breath as well. When it happens it only does it for 5-10 seconds, but over the past week it started to give a stinging sensation in my chest when it occured. Now I know I should have gone to the doctors sooner but...well I am an idiot. I can be doing absolutely nothing and this will happen. Sitting down watching TV completely relaxed and then BAM, my heart is doing the macarena and trying to burst out like the movie aliens....then stop.

I did some reading around and it sounds like it might be Atrial fibrillation? No idea.

So I go to the Doc. on monday, but does anyone have an idea as to what it may be? Just so strange to be having such a problem. I thought I was rather healthy for my age. (21)

Is your heart beating regularly? As in is the space between each beat pretty much always the same?

I did my best to "feel" that and here is some crude info I can give you.

Sounds like da dum da dum da dum, not much of a space really. Having now paid more attention to it now and sitting and feeling it out. I can sometimes spot a random extra beat if that makes sense.

It will be going da dum da dum da dum then throw in an extra one. da dum da da dum da dum

    lol...

Re: Heart question: Sporadic rapid heart beat.

It sounds like what I have - ectopic heartbeats

I get ectopic heartbeats - they started about 4 years ago - about one every 2 mins or so - they are "half-beats", where a group of cells in my heart beat randomly and out of sync with my normal heartbeats. Sometimes (usually when I'm sitting or laying, and my heartbeats are weaker), these cells are enough to trigger a heartbeat early - which is then followed by a longer period as the hearts electrical system resets, then followed by a stronger compensatory beat - which is what i usually feel.

When walking or running, the normal heartbeat electrical signals are stronger, so these rouge cells, when they do fire off, do not usually cause an early beat.

Now this is worrying for me, as when I was 2 years old, I had open heart surgery for a hole in the heart (something called Tetrology of Fallots). Despite all these, my speacialist in London is not the slightest bit confirmed. He told me about one patient of his who has one of these ectopic beats EVERY OTHER BEAT, and apparently he is fine.

anyway, good luck getting it checked out!

have you got much stress going on at the moment?, as mine are WAY worse when I'm under stress.

Wow that is interesting thanks for the explanation about that.

As far as stress goes I don't feel like I am under much stress. My daily job is laid back and I have excellent grades in school. I am helping with some prepress work on the side for my fathers business. Just your average amount I feel.

I fear it may be my bad drinking habits that have caused this.

    Thanks again guys. :)

I wouldnt be too worried from your desciption, but you should prolly have an ECG to be sure. For you to be in AF at such a young age would be pretty rare.

Chris... What you're describing are ventricular ectopics. The evidence (CAST(1) and CAST II(2) trials) shows treating non-symptomatic ventricular ectopics at best does nothing for mortality and morbidity, and at worst does harm to survival.

yup, hence the fact my specialist said his is reluctant to do anything (ablation etc), unless they are affecting my quality of life, which there are not. Annnoying, yes, but affecting my life, not really.

Prolly two cans of soda a day. It "keeps me going" so to speak. On weekends I do the usual casual drinking with friends. Which is never less than 6 beers....typically more :/
