    WTH - VF900-Cu sucks badly?

    Hey!

I have been running company of heroes quite a lot lately, and I have really noticed how this game taxes the vid card like no other. Now I had the accelero X2 and reached mid-high 80's at times so I installed the stock cooler again -put the fan at 80% and it was nice and "cool" at around 70 degrees. I can't stand the noise though so I bought the VF900-Cu that everyone is raving about. I was really surprised to see that temps reached mid 90's and computer crash after about 3-4 minutes of game play. I thought that I might have applied the thermal paste the wrong way (had Arctic Alumina that time). So I took everything off and tried with AS5 just for kicks. Same terrible results!!

So what the hell is going on here? I have fan at maximum and have applied thermal compund the same way I haved done for the last 10 years so I doubt it's that.

The card idles at 43 degrees, and thats a good temp. Seems like cooler is "doing its work" but COH at 1680x1050 with ultra detail and FSAA is too much to handle?

I am really disappointed in the performance of the cooler and wondering if I am missing something?

Temp log from ATI tool after starting the game:

I have it fitted properly as far as I know with the larger part of the heatsink pointing away from mobo and installed after instructions. When I unscrewed it the first time it looked like the thermal paste had applied in the middle of the core and perfectly fine. I decided to try something else now and started RTHDRIBL which usually stresses your GPU a lot. I was spinning and turning and trying different things out, yet I could not get over 60 degrees. It seems lika COH at high res and ultra detail is just a killer for GPUS? I guess I'll have to put stock fan back on...

Is the VF900 even warm to the touch?

Your asking to much, the AC and VF900 should'nt cool any better then the stock cooler anyway and are both fairly even with the VF900 only having a 1C advantage... All they do is reduce the noise. Stock cooler with fanspeed increased just a little actually outperforms both of them...

Also anything less then 90C is very good and you really don't need to worry about your temps.. My X1900XTX runs at around 95C with both AC and VF900.. Some just run hotter then others and yours in comparision runs quite cool.

Something is definitely not right. I have a Sapphire 1900 XT 512MB with the VF900 overclocked with ATI's auto overclocking utility and I have never seen it go over 61 degrees Celsius when playing COH with max setttings and antialiasing. The stock cooler would go over 80 degrees running at stock settings. I had an Accelero X2 before the VF900 and wasn't impressed because that would get to 80 degrees at stock settings also even though the idle temp was low. The only thing I can think of is make sure you're not putting too much thermal grease on and when you tighten the spring screws to switch between the four screws and turn them each a little at a time until it's fully seated. Other than that, it might be a case airflow thing. Cross your fingers.....

Well I've had the X1900XTX for almost a year and in that time have posted in allot of threads regarding temps accross many forums and my temps are normal.. If my card was overheating I somehow doubt it have lasted this long

Its completely normal for an X1900XTX to load in the low 90s. .
