2 CPUs, same mobo, only 1 core shows

I have an MSI 890FXA-GD70 board. Really nice board imo for the price. I have tried two different dual core processors, but windows and bios only report 1 core. I tried "unlocking" the second core and I don't get a post. What could be the issue here? One CPU is a 65watt, and the other is a 20watt. Do both 4 pin power connectors need to be plugged in for the CPU? The mobo has phase leds on it, phase 1 through 4, and only using phase 2 and the phase 3 light blinks off and on. Not sure if that has any information in it that would fix the issue.

You should have called this : "Two cpu's, one core."

Anyway, I had an MSI mb that gave all kinds of weirdness when trying to "unlock" cores.

try setting the default bios settings and then.:"Set "Unlock CPU Core" to ENABLED, cpu core control to MANUAL ."

Personally I would update the bios first and see if that doesn't solve the problem, it could just be an older bios that doesn't fully recognize your cpu properly.

Re: 2 CPUs, same mobo, only 1 core shows

BIOS is v1.13 which came out in January. v1.14 is the latest but came out just 2 months later.

A BIOS update might work for the Athlon II 170u which this board supports, but I tossed in a Athlon II 240 that has been around since the Athlon II was launched and still the same thing. Just 1 core.

I'll try that BIOS settings. Currently at default. Though at least with the 170u when I enabled CPU unlocking it wouldn't post. I went a head and plugged in the second 4pin cpu connector, and as I thought no difference. :-(

    MODS:
If it would be better for the title to be changed to Tino's recommendation, change it please. :-)

    2 CPU's, one core.

Does anything at all show two cores being enabled? What does Cpu Z show?

Re: 2 CPUs, same mobo, only 1 core shows

BIOS, task manager and cpu-z all report 1 core.

After I change oil in the vehicles here I will try what you said in BIOS and maybe update bios, though I am almost positive that wont work.

Oh, on the Athlon II 240, stock it runs at 2.8GHz, but task manager reports only 2GHz which is the stock speed of the 170u.

I am running Windows 8 Preview.

Yeah, lol. One rig decided to have an "issue", restart and fix itself.

Now I just wonder if they other one is going to do the same, or already did.
