    Odd boot behaviour

    Whatcha ya think it is?

I press the power button on my PC and it makes nice for about 3 to 5 seconds and then all the lights and fans go out. 2 seconds after that it all lights up again and goes through the normal boot process.

It can't be good for the HDDs. Outside of that, I have zero issues with the system.

    Could it be the PSU?

Specifications are as per left side.

I had this issue with my old PC Power and Cooling 510w and 5870.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it could be weak capacitors in the PSU

Whenever something is turned on, the initial jolt of electricity is pretty high. The caps might not be able to handle the first try.

Edit: I never had an issue either, but as you said, it's probably not too good for the hardware.

It's either your power supply or motherboard failing to give a positive "power good" signal. My guess would be the motherboard first and the power supply second.

    Re: Odd boot behaviour

My Asus p5q did that from day one, upgraded since then but never had a problem out of if. Then i noticed it didnt do it one day after setting bios to defualt.

It was happening when I manually set the ram to the correct speed. 1066 instead of what the motherboard defaulted to. If i didnt set that it would boot without the on/off/on routine. But like i said other than that it never had any problems. But if you have not changed anything and you are sure it was not happening before, then not sure of or if it is a problem.

That being said, my comp is never shutdown unless necessary and it did not do it during a regular restart.

    Re: Odd boot behaviour

And I thought it was just a feature of Asus motherboards.

The post above mine is probably correct, as my ram voltage is set manually too.

Mine does it and has done for the last 4 years, never had problems though.

Chiming in with my ASUS P5QPro did that too. This current one, not but I do run with SPD.

    Re: Odd boot behaviour

That happens with several motherboard when power is first connected or the main PSU switch turned on, kind of like a warm up. The fact that it started happening even without main power being cut, it could be a psu issue.

    Re: Odd boot behaviour

Well I set the bios to load set up defaults and it seems to have done the trick.

I had to change the SATA controllers back to RAID but that was it.

    Boots on the first try.
