It's a shame that certain individuals feel the need to justify their purchase; do they really think ATI or Nvidia care about them personally? If you’re running a single GPU configuration then I would suggest buying whatever the fastest card is (at that time from either side) based upon your budget. It's ridiculous that some people feel the need to defend their purchase so vigorously when another person chooses to buy a competitor’s product.

If however you’re running a multi GPU setup then that’s different, do your research carefully and choose wisely Both companies have had driver or Gcard problems at one time or another but picking a side and ignoring a superior product from a competitor is pathetic. You don't receive points for brand loyalty, you only limit your options.

I bet a lot of those self-proclaimed AMD fanboys swore they would never buy an Intel CPU; I wonder how many of them purchased Sandybridge when it was released.

7970 GHz Edition is essentially "overclocked 7970" and nothing more, true, but it's official product, if you want to compare to overclocked 680's, overclocked 7970 (GHz Editions or not) is the correct comparison point, not the stock 7970 GHz Edition.

It wasn't that long ago when all the top models were just high end models with higher clocks, nothing else separating them, this isn't any different from that.

You know that 7970 GHz Edition is overcklocked card, do you?

When you compare any product (car, TV, boat, house etc.) you never compare base model with high (extra equipped).

But in your case logic fade away when AMD product is under spotlight.

7970 GHz Edition can be seen as "OC'd 7970", but it's a official model, stock version of what it is. From not too far in the past, was 8800 Ultra not a official product, but just "OC'd GTX"? Or the countless other cases just like that, where only thing different between fastest and 2nd fastest model of the family is mere clocks?

They're all official models. AMD and Nvidia just knock together the reference models, then they tell the IHVs whether overclocked and modded versions are allowed. So it doesn't matter if it's announced by AMD or Nvidia, they all have to be officially sanctioned by them anyway.

Of course it was just an overclocked 8800GTX, just like any other similar situations.

Read bolded text and try to understand what my point is about.

    7970 GHz stock=overclocked.

C'mon CB, it is oced 7970 to the bone and can not be in the same compare group with not overclocked cards.
How much room for overclock have 7970, and how much 7970 GHz edition?

    7970 GHz Edition is just as much "overclocked" as 8800 Ultra, 9800GTX+, GTS250, HD4770, HD2900XT, 7900GTX, 7950GT, 7900GTO, 6800 Ultra, X1900XTX, X1800XT etc etc.

There's one thing all these cards share - they all use same core, with exact same configuration as another model of the same family, with only thing separating the cards being the clocks.

As expected you didn't answer my question.

    Let's move on.
    Good news for consumers:
AMD is lowering prices on their graphics cards, that should kick in today. The Radeon HD 7970, Radeon HD 7950, and Radeon HD 7870 are all getting official price cuts.

    The 7970 will be dropping from $479 to $429, the 7950 from $399 to $349, and the 7870 from $349 to $299.

Summer 2012 Radeon HD 7000 Series Price Cuts
    Card Launch Price Spring Summer
    Radeon HD 7970 $549 $479 $429
    Radeon HD 7950 $449 $399 $349
    Radeon HD 7870 $349 $349 $299
    Radeon HD 7850 $249 $249 ~$239
    Radeon HD 7770 $159 $139 ~$119
    Radeon HD 7750 $109 $109 ~$99

Official as in, reference clocks, set by chip provider, you know what I mean.
Of course it was just an overclocked 8800GTX, just like any other similar situations.
But still no-one said you should only compare OC'd Card Z to Card X because card X is just overclocked card Y, not before now anyway, as long as it was one of the official models [in the sense that you know what I mean by it], they weren't considered as "only OC'd models and you should only compare OC'd other cards to this"

The OC headroom? It's always a draw of luck how well running GPU and memories you happen to get, but at least few users who tried the GHz Edition BIOS already reported higher OC potential than with stock BIOS on the same card, so in general GHz Edition should yield better OC'ing results, too. (of course, if you have reference and don't mind about warranty that much, you can flash GHz Edition BIOS to normal version)
