Android Phone - out of internal memory, can't update apps

I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S which has 1gb of internal memory (and I have a 16gb SD card).
The 'phone storage space is getting low' symbol is now constantly in the status bar.

Apps2SD says I have around 37mb available (depending on the cache) but also next to that it says 'total:420mb' though I don't know what this is? I counted the kb size of all the app that are on my phone and they come to about 123mb.

So I have no idea where this 1gb of internal storage has gone seeing as I only have 123mb of stuff on it. No doubt there are a lot of Android files and bloatware taking up space but it's complete crap that I can only install so little to my internal storage (which I can't move). Is there anything I can do to free up space?

Your phones ROM is also located on that internal storage so that is what is taking up the rest of the room.

You could try other ROMs, but I doubt you will get more room for apps. Most Roms based on Official Roms use the same partitioning system.

With my phone, in order to get more room for apps, I had to use a rom that has a completely different partition system (MTD) which is not based on any official Rom. Your best bet is to look at Cyanogenmod ROMs or AOKP ROMS as they are not based on stock.

Re: Android Phone - out of internal memory, can't update apps

I take it your phone is rooted and you have partitioned your SD card and use link2SD to auto move all apps and library's to SD card and link to phone.

There is no way you should be using that much memory if you are doing this correctly. The rom its self should surely not take up much more than 200-300meg or so ?

Do you have loads of multimedia messages or webcache and downloads saved to internal storage or anything like that?

Get link2SD and press options and storage info. It will list every drive and partition and show you what the levels of each is, including system, internal, sd card, partition 1, 2 etc.

Yes either use a AOSP or AOKP rom which will be way smaller than your stock ROM or you can start moving apps that you don't use all the time to your SD card go to menu/settings/apps select the app you want to move to your SD card when you select it you will get a option to move to phone storage this will move the app off your internal storage and onto your SD card.

I don't know if he is rooted or not but since Gingerbread you can move apps to SD from within the apps section as I listed above.

I don't know if he is rooted or not but since Gingerbread you can move apps to SD from within the apps section as I listed above.
This does not move the apps properly. Doing it via the phone GUI leaves a lot of data left over on the internal storage including the librarys, dalvik-cahce apks etc. Depending on the app, some apps leave almost their entire size on the internal. Installing apps and moving to SD card as normal will cause the internal mem to fill up eventually and he will hit the same problem.

This is why you must use Link2SD. Basically you use partitioned SD card to trick the phone into thinking that it is extra internal storage in the most basic terms anyway.

Here you go op this will tell you all about it http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/12/12...-limits-again/ I even found the guide specific to your make of phone :)

Seems the xperia rom is 1gb and you should have 380left for apps which is pretty appalling. But if you use link2SD and follow the guide above you will find you will be able to install many many more apps before running out of internal mem.

My phone was rooted but then I did an update and I think it unrooted?
I took a look on the XDA forums but over overwhelmed by all the jargon and all the posts - even when I looked in the forum for my phone I had no flippin' idea how to even take the first step. I really need a moron's guide to...
