Re: ATI 5870 to GTX 580 ?? ... Good upgrade or not ??

I won the card on ebay, its on its way, from Ireland.
    Paid £240 exc the P+P.
Pleased with that as without the waterblocks their going for more than that.

Only thing that p!ssed me off a little was some guy with no feedback came on the auction and ended up bumping the price from £201 to £240, Not best pleased about that, as one might think that the seller had a friend who popped onto his auction and bumped the price a little to lower the loss that the seller would suffer for selling the card cheap.
Despite the seller having over 100 sales with 100% feedback, I'm still paranoid about people with 0% feedback bidding against me when no one else had happened to bid on the auction for the last 5 days of it.

Never mind, here's what I got coming to me.

Guess I got a good excuse for clearing out all the dust from my Rad now.

Re: ATI 5870 to GTX 580 ?? ... Good upgrade or not ??

    Yes, but got problems.

Took me 2 days to take apart my PC and clean it and rebuild it but now its all back together I'm getting 1 long and 3 short beeps from the mobo at boot, and no signal either.

Looks like its the video card, but don't know if its dead or whether the PSU just isn't giving it enough volts.

Anyone got any ideas, before I tear shreds off the guy I bought it from ???????????

If the PSU (an enermax 850W) was not giving the video card enough power, would it still be NOT detected ?
Or as its running at essentially 2D clocks at bootup, would it still be detected, I'm assuming it would, therefore the card must be stuffed, correct ??

99% sure it won't be a power problem. Seems it may be the card, but do you still have your old card?

What i'd do is just take your card out, and put the 5870 in without changing your water over, turn it on for 5 seconds and see if its posts, if it does flick the psu switch to off so the card isn't on long enough to get hot.

edit: then i'd rma it and buy a card from me ;)

Re: ATI 5870 to GTX 580 ?? ... Good upgrade or not ??

    Cheers for the reply.

I was in two minds whether it was the PSU, its a few years old now but I never had a problem before.

I luckily still have the 5870, but because of the way my loop is I will still have to drain it to try it out as there is not enough room to remove the 580 out of the way and try the 5870.

I'll try what you suggest, and see where I go from there.

Thanks for trying to help, but according to the asus support site, 1 long, 2 short beeps is RAM, but 1 long and 3 short is VIDEO.

    http://support.asus.com/Search/KDeta...en&no=1034&t=1

3.2.1.2 Graphics card issue: Beep (1 long 3 short)

I've just taken my PC to a nearby shop and they hooked up a brand new 800W to the connectors and it still gave out 1 long and 3 short, so looks like the GTX 580 is stuffed.

Not sure if the guy on ebay is going to be cooperative about giving me back my cash, but if he wants to keep his 100% feedback etc then he should hopefully reimburse me without too many problems, otherwise I'll have to put in a dispute through ebay, paypal etc.

All this sh*t couldn't have come at a worse time tbh, just about to move house and didn't need this hassle at the moment.

Also looks like until I get my money back I'll have to stick with the single 5870, only upside is, my computer is the cleanest its been since I built it nearly 4 years ago.

Re: ATI 5870 to GTX 580 ?? ... Good upgrade or not ??

Well I rebuilt my PC with the ATI 5870 and guess what ?
    It works flawlessly !!
Just like I knew it would.

So either this GTX 580 is dead or there is a very small chance that its not dead but its incompatible with my Asus Maximus Formula SE motherboard and according to some in depth research I did on google last night, there is a very small chance.

So when I send it back, the guy might as well try it in his PC cos if it works, at least he isn't going to be out of pocket.

I'm also thinking of trying it in someone else's motherboard, a local PC shop maybe, just to see whether its detected at bootup, if it is, then the only way I can upgrade is either buy another 5870 and a bigger PSU or wait until I can upgrade the mobo, cpu, gpu and psu too but that will be pretty expensive.
