Cool, just pray you don't end up with a corrupted download. I've read that many people who jumped on the amazon deal had a bunch of CRC errors.

Gamma cheating at nighttime basically makes nights useless tripe.
I recently bought the game but it doesn't seem to be working. Every time I join a server I keep getting kicked or banned before I can even select a team.
Yeah, I agree with this. Realistically though, your eyes should adapt somewhat. Pretty sure that the amount of light at night for the mod was lowered, as IMHO, vanilla Arma2 OA had the perfect amount when it's dark.

For starters, you need to make sure you're running Combined Ops. If you haven't already done so, you need to run vanilla Arma2 once, then exit and run OA, where you should be given the option to run it as Combined Ops.
Also, you'll need to make sure that DayZ is the only mod you are running. Don't worry about trying to use the CBA or JayArma2Lib mods that you may see listed in the server mod list, right now those are only for server-side.
Finally, you'll need to make sure you are running the same version of the mod (the update to 1.5.8.3 is the latest version as of today from what I've just read.) Check the server name to see what version they have listed. You'll also of course need to make sure you're joining a DayZ server and not one of the other game types.
I would also recommend using the Arma 2 Launcher to make it easier to launch the mod as well as set advanced game options without having to mess with adding parameters to the shortcut yourself.

1.5.8.4 hotfix has just been released. There was a bug that the database server reached 1 million saved characters (including old dead ones) which was causing issues.
My friends and I had no issues installing the game from Amazon. Everything went real smooth. However, like many of you have stated, I feel that nighttime is worthless to try and play in. I was able to make it to a building using the majority of my flares and once I got on top I waited. My flare goes out and I go to throw another one and somehow as I am throwing it I run off the top of the building and fall to my death lol. I hope they adjust the night time setting.

Just make sure you follow the #1 rule: Trust no one. Many people just shoot on sight, and some will even try to bait people to them by asking to team up just to kill them and take their stuff. I used to try and be friendly and helpful to those I come across, but more often than not they would end up killing me anyway, even with me obviously having nothing but starter equipment. Now I just shoot people if they so much as make any funny moves to aim at me.
Also, as to the darkness at night, I've found that adjusting the brightness and gamma (but only just enough to barely make out objects around you) helps a bit. Most would say that's practically a form of cheating though, although as long as you don't crank them up to max I don't see the problem with that.
Keep in mind too that it's often best to avoid shooting zombies, as all it does is attract more zombies and other players to your location. It's not too difficult to sneak into a town and take supplies, just either crawl or crouch-walk, and keep an eye on your visibility & sound gauge. Different surfaces such as paved roads is noisy and exposes you, as you'll notice that even when crouch-walking you usually make some sound and are more visible, so it's best to crawl over these. The zombies are basically blind, but they can hear you from a long ways off if you run, even through walls and buildings.
It's bloody awesome.
