    Re: Religion and Politics - where?

    You'll all be pleased to know April was the wettest on record here after nearly 3 years of lacking rain (LOL) and subsequently drought and flood warnings in place, with many areas having a hosepipe ban. Oh and it's cool here. Ridiculously cool - was warmer in December for many places.

    Global warming FTW

    The timing is coincidental, though unfortunate. The admins and mods have been talking about removing R&P for some time as part of tackling the wider issue of the constant bickering between certain groups in all sections of the forum.

    Whatever the section of the forum, if people stay within the code of conduct, there is no reason to delete anything. It's not about other people having thin skins, or taking offence too easily. It is about you taking personal responsibility to think before posting, specifically:

    You agree not to do any of the following actions while posting to Futuremark: (1) harass, threaten, embarrass or slander any person or entity; ... (4) disrupt the normal flow of dialogue in the Discussion Board or otherwise act in a manner that negatively affects other users;

    I am ready to bet with you that the quantity of flame wars within R&P discussions will be lower than in some of the other (consoles, PC gaming, display adapters...) boards.

    Having no reason to come will certainly stop the bickering. It will also lead to 3-4 posts total a day. Genius.

    Two issues. First, if a single person doesn't want R&P in GD, they could derail the whole thing by making a single troll comment, and that wouldn't seem fair.
    Second, I don't think R&P and GD stuff are necessarily meant to go together. I felt like they worked quite well as separate entities, because as was said earlier, when you clicked on a board named "Religion and Politics" you knew what you were getting into. Where as now, when you click on "General Discussion", you don't necessarily.

    The possible benefit is that there may be people who would have valuable input into the discussion who previously wouldn't have bothered but now may, striking up more varied and interesting conversations.

    I mean, it isn't like we have much of a choice, lol. So I guess I vote we give it a try.

    People will say yes, but I think the honest answer is no. It's an unfortunate reality that many religious and even political views are, by definition, intolerant.

    You could say the same thing about anything.

    Would the admins decide to remove the Graphics Hardware forum because people constantly flame each other, often worse than what happens in R&P? What about in PC Gaming?

    Having a favorite graphics card or game, doesn't define you as being intolerant. Holding a view that anyone who doesn't share your belief systems is damned to hell, might.

    No, because there are clear and logical connections between Futuremark and graphics hardware and gaming. There is no connection between Futuremark and religion and politics (other than laws which affect your rights to own and use software).

    Code of conduct applies to all forums, and as I said, there is a wider issue. Still, I would rather our volunteer mods spend their time moderating forums at the core of our business and community, than fire-fighting religious and political flame wars.
