OK, I used Microsoft utility and it finished, but I can't figure out how to make my old A64 3000+ system boot from USB. It gives me selection of USB-CDROM (failed to boot), USB Floppy (haven't tried), USB LS120 or something... Is there another way to check whether the created USB is bootable?

I'm not disagreeing with you, most are configured straight away. There are some awkward companies that don't do it though, so that is the way to get it working.

It may be under HDD but that is usually for external HDDs. You will need to find the HDD order and change it. If there is no option then it should be USB-HDD. If still not then fook knows.

You don't need any of that. Either format your stick using NTFS format and extract the iso onto it using winrar or download and use this. It'll do everything for you.

copy contents from CD/ISO to USB. Boot from USB.
Would formating it into ntfs (format quick fs=ntfs) make any difference?

Most original athlon 64 (socket 754 and 939) did not have bios support for booting from a flash drive as flash drives were just making ther way on to the market. Check to make sure you are running the most current bios for your board as they may have added support towards the end of the support time (generally 2 sometimes 3 years) for your model.

This link also gives a alternate way of creating a bootable USB drive with Win 7 and also tells you how you can slipstream SP1 into the image if you have a pre-SP1 install disk before making the bootable flash drive.

Re: The easiest way to create bootable Windows 7 USB drive?

My 790FX/PhenomII wouldn't boot from a USB drive either. You need a "USB Storage Function" option the the BIOS - If it's not there you may wanna try F8 on Asus, F12 on Gigabyte during boot and select boot device from there.
