Any random reason causing high temperatures within your case and thus heating the gfx card too high too?
Any frequency can easily be achieved as long as the card stays within its thermal limits. It's simple : Set your desired frequency, max out your power limit and make sure your card stays at or under 70C.
Which is why I said within set powerlimit (and if you get high enough and use some watercooling or something, you could even with maxed powerlimit run into power limits and thus not reach desired clocks - of course this is hypothetical situation though)

All this is nothing new, cards have had built-in protection for years, they've downclocked, throttled themselves, reduced power consumption and so on. This is just an extension of that.

Hi CB, better late than never On my new card the default boost is 1150MHz, and according to Precision X
while running Heaven, it is rock steady at 1176Hz

From stock clocks, no raised powerlimits etc?

I thought i'd give EVGA Precision a try, since i usually use Afterburner. Well surprisingly Precision reports my Boost clocks to be higher than what Afterburner does. Afterburner reports a constant 1085, but precision reports a constant 1110. No manual overclocking here, just the Boost function.

Interesting. I'll have to try Afterburner and see if my results differ as well.

I've noticed a couple of other things too, my card appears to be running hotter with Precision, with Afterburner it was idling @32c, now it's @38c. The other thing is the default fanspeed profile, it's more aggressive with precision, it's @42%, whilst in Afterburner the fanspeed percentage matched the heat output in Celsius. I don't know if one of them is reading the sensors incorrectly, or if there's an actual difference though. I'll have to find something else to monitor it, see what's really happening.

    EDIT:
GPU-Z reports the same temps', so it doesn't seem to be mis-reading it, i've adjusted the fanspeed to match Afterburner, and temperatures have come down to 35c, with the fanspeed @35%. I think my card is a bit weird.

Precision X shows the voltage going from default 987mv to 1175mv during the benchmark, is this what you were after,
as am not sure what the normal voltages are on the standard GTX680 mine is factory overclocked, Gainward
may have increased it slightly for their 6-phase power circuit.

I can't really figure out any other possibility than Precision forcing higher volts to achieve this, I mean it all suggests that - higher temps, higher boost, need for more aggressive fanprofile?
