    Steamroller new architecture for AMD?

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/AMD-s...e-264918.shtml

Any truth that Steamroller isn't just going to be a refreshed Bulldozer/Piledriver? I hope so, and hope that it can bring great improvements on all fronts.

I wish that AMD had just kept Phenom II going onto 32nm and just crank out 4, 6 and 8 core processors.

Re: Steamroller new architecture for AMD?

Steamroller should be pretty similar to Bulldozer and Piledriver. The "33% improvement" over Bulldozer mentioned in the article is probably just based on AMD's slides showing 10-15% performance/watt improvement from Bulldozer to Piledriver, and then Piledriver to Steamroller. Bulldozer is rotten in terms of performance/watt, so AMD has plenty of room for improvement. A target launch of very late 2013 or 2014 for Steamroller FX is a rather long wait considering Intel will have launched Haswell long before then and 14-nm Broadwell won't be far away.

AMD needs to stop using power alluding metaphors as names for their chips until the chips are actually really capable to steamroll, bulldoze and piledrive the competition into submission.

Eh, steamrollers weren't really made to crush, they were made to plod along at a steady pace, smoothing out the road for future traffic. Let's hope that's happening, because Intel hasn't had much to worry about since the Athlon XP days, and I miss buying stuff from the underdog.
