Sounds like it needs a patch, or some bright spark to make a better ini file for it, if its not great on an I7, surely its the game.

    Are you answering Dolfan?
The problem isn't the i7. The problem is the gtx285 which just don't have enough horse power, sli or no sli it seems.
I had a gtx260, heavily clocked, BF3 was unplayable even at low settings.

    Take a look at this:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ce,3063-5.html

As you can see even @ 1920x1080p a GTX 285 pulls of 30 fps with 4xMSAA and FXAA. This review is from october 2011, so keep in mind that there has been multiple driver updates with optimizations specifically adressing BF3.

The GTX 285 offers a somewhat similar performance to a GTX 460, however as is stated in the beginning of the review, it will not render all effects as is it not DirectX 11 compatible.

The same goes for the GTX 260. I have seen my roommate play BF3 on a 64player maps on medium setting at 1920x1080 without problems whatsoever. Sure, it isnt as pretty as on DirectX 11 compatible graphics card, but the game is still good looking and I dont believe I have ever seen it drop below 30fps.

    Check it out:

As you can see plenty of people is playing BF3 with a GTX 260. Lol... going for ultra settings might be stretching it a bit :).

So with a old school dual core I imagine performance would be very severely effected in MP.

SP runs completely fine with a dualy though. Almost no difference between dual and quad in SP.
I play it on high settings with my old trusy E8400 @ 3,0 GHz and a Geforce 560Ti.

My Lenovo Y470 Laptop does alright with it. It's a quad core 2630QM, 8GB RAM and 550M. At resolutions of 1280x720 or 1366x768 it does pretty well ~30-50 fps on medium and textures on high. If I try to increase the res to 1600x900 or 1920x1080 on an external monitor though, the 550M chokes. You really do need a quad core though. You could barely get away with a dual core in Bad Company 2, often had to stick to smaller 16-24 player servers.

There is a config I use on both my machines though, helps performance pretty well and I personally haven't noticed a loss of visual quality. Make a text document in Notepad, and save it as user.cfg in your Origin Games/Battlefield 3 directory with the following pasted in:
    PostProcess.DynamicAOEnable 0
    Render.DrawFps 1
    RenderDevice.VSyncEnable 0
    RenderDevice.ForceRenderAheadLimit 1
    RenderDevice.TripleBufferingEnable 1
    WorldRender.DxDeferredCsPathEnable 0
    WorldRender.FxaaEnable 0
    WorldRender.MotionBlurEnable 0
    WorldRender.SpotLightShadowmapEnable 0
    WorldRender.SpotLightShadowmap*Resolution 256
    WorldRender.TransparencyShadowmapsEnable 0

I agree there is something to the cpu as I've tried it on my laptop with a 550 (well, a 540 OCed to 550 speeds) but a dual core and it can't even do 30fps in MP no matter the settings.

Re: BF3 on low end systems?

Well, App, I'm quite stunned here. My q9450@3500 and my GTX260 was a disaster. When I got a GTX570 I could max out Ultra with mostly 60 fps.
So.. I was sure that the 260 GPU just couldn't do it.
I must say that I'm skeptic to those videos as I tried so hard myself with zero gain, not calling you a liar!, but it just seems so unreal. Maybe the i7 boosts the performance so much that the 260 suffice? It seems so, can't think of any other reason.
Is the i7 really that much faster than my trusty q9450@3500?
    I need to upgrade.. (again)
    Nice post btw!

I'm not sure where my 6770 sits compared to the 260 but I run it amazingly on medium settings (50-60fps, some dips to 40fps on big maps) and it handles high ok enough.

It could very well be CPU that makes the difference. If that's the case then to refer to the OP, it may run very poorly.

Re: BF3 on low end systems?

Well the thing is, its my little cousins PC, and he simply doesnt have the money for a CPU or GPU upgrade.

So what I did was I brought 4GB of my RAM to his house and installed it (DDR2/DDR3 combo mobo) and the game DID run alot better. Its not really playable in terms of a perfect experience, but he's satisfied. I got killed left n right n center playing on his rig simply because aiming was too hard with the low FPS but he said it'll be okay for him.

The interesting thing was though, that the FPS didnt change at all by setting the IQ to lowest details. But reducing the resolution to 720p had a certain effect. Too bad you cant play with 720p on a 1080p monitor because you cant see sh*t anymore.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, 4GB RAM will have to do for now. What would be the cheapest way to upgrade the CPU to a quadcore on a S775 motherboard? Or would that be a waste of money?

Seconded. Still a very strong CPU today.

I haven't had an nvidia card in sometime, but you should be able to enable GPU scaling in the control panel. For instance, if I use 720p on my monitor, it upscales just fine, but if I use GPU upscaling, it much worse. Your situation could be the opposite. It's worth a shot.
