Re: Anyone (UK) Recommend a Galaxy S ICS or Honeycomb ROM?

Most Android users are still on 2.3 which is GB if I remember correctly and only 6% out of all Android users are on ICS, or so I've read recently in Computer World. What does that mean? well, it could mean that either the newer builds bring nothing new to the table and/or are buggy as hell.

You are in the minority here.

Here. I was able to find a link to an article which confirms what I've just said. More or less.

    EDIT : ADDED LINK.

There are a few reasons why so few users are on ICS right now. Biggest one are the telecoms who ratify the release on their network. Apple doesn't do this. In many cases telecoms companies have to code their own modem, then test, give it to who makes the ROM, test then ratify the release. This happens on each local provider. Multiply that by the number of phones and it's ridiculous.

Then there are people like me who use Sky Go; ICS is not supported; will not upgrade until it is, if ever. *****.

Then there are people who don't care and only get an update if they get a notification, and then may not upgrade because they need PC software and don't know how to do it. Etc etc...

ICS on this phone has been far and away superior in performance to 2.3. It's faster, smoother and more intuitive.

    Only 3 issues:

1: Youtube app crashes when trying to play videos
    2: Cannot receive picture messages
3: Choice of ring/message tones is crap!

I also find ICS smoother and that's on a samsung galaxy mini, its just a shame camera don't work. To fix picture messages have a look at your APN settings.

Don't have any problems with youtube on ICS.
I could not receive picture messages on either stock or custom GB ROM's. I thought it was a problem with my provider but to my surprise it worked when I upgraded to ICS.
Never bothered to change ringtone but have changed the alarm tone with no issues.

As for only 6% running ICS on SGS. Perhaps it's because it's only ALPHA releases from custom builds so it's not 100% functional and likely to have a few bugs. Samsung has made no attempt to release ICS to SGS but they have hinted at a dumbed down version so it's up to people to make custom versions with full functionality.

I would also take a guess at the fact the majority of people don't use custom ROMs.

The ALPHA ICS rom I'm using now compared to GB is:

    1. Noticeably faster
    2. Much smoother
    3. More stable (aka less crashes)
    4. Phone doesn't randomly hang up or crash like it did in GB
    5. Phone doesn't randomly crash or shut down like it did in GB
    6. More options in settings despite a few not being available atm
    7. Tethering is a lot better (less issues)
    8. Battery life is superior with WIFI and GPS enabled. It's up for debate with both disabled.
    9. Browser, Youtube, and games run faster
    10. Youtube videos no longer stop loading half way through a video
    11. Text message pictures now work
    12. Better sound controls
    13. etc

I could keep going but as I said everyone gets different results. I honestly had no idea it would be this good. I upgraded with the intention to revert back to GB as I heard it was only good for trying out to see what it's like but I managed to land the latest build at the time which fixed may bugs and opened up a whole list of new functions which made it almost fully functional. Even the default camera is superior with zoom functionality even when recording.

I did some fiddling and changed through a couple of ICS builds. I got one that everything worked... except normal texts wouldn't send lol, now that's a major issue.

In the end I just restored back to a Gingerbread backup for the time being. Soooo laggy tho

Or it could be that it just takes a long time to for all the carries and phones to actually get ICS (the older phones probably won't even get it). Even when GB came out, it took awhile for all the phones to catch up to it.

ICS is by far much better than GB, it's a much better improvement over say Eclaire to Gingerbread. The usual progress of new OS goes like this:

    1. Flagship Google phone gets it first
    2. Older Google phones get them
    3. Latest flagship phones of each leading brand get them next (first through community efforts, followed by the manufacturers). This is usually the newest Samsung Galaxy phone.
    4. All other recent phones follow
    5. Outdated phones that were not scheduled to get them have a few community developers that make the effort to port it over.

If you actually read near the end of the link you posted:

On the other hand, by its fifth month of availability, Gingerbread was found only on 1.7% of Android devices. Notice some similarity there? Though things didn’t get off to a good start either for Gingerbread, its market performance did improve drastically later, and it crossed the 50% barrier by November 2011.
GB took awhile to catch on as well, it's just a common cycle in the Android world. It does not mean that it brings nothing new or it's buggy, it just takes awhile for manufacturers to get on the ball and deliver quickly.

It's a big problem when companies develop hardware and give no source code to run that hardware. It's like trying to get hardware designed for Windows 2000 with drivers only released for that OS to work on Vista or Linux. The community does a great job in trying to get hardware to work, but even development on Sgs2 back in January ground to a halt because codeworkx et al had no possibility of getting gpu support without leaked binaries.
