Windows 7 tweaks? Do they exist?

I am building an i7, 8Gb RAM, SSD, GTX 680 gaming rig and will install Windows 7 Home on it. I optimized the heck out of Windows XP on the current outdated rig with just 10 services set to Automatic, and 3 set to Manual to give me all the needed functions - install and play games & use software (Ad-Aware, CCleaner, uTorrent, Steam, AVG Anti-Virus, K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, MS Office 2003, DAEMON Tools Lite) use the internet, transfer files between different cards (SD card, etc.) and external devices.

I want to optimize Windows 7 to that same minimum and disable functions worthless to me if that improves performance. I don't care for network sharing, remote user control, user switching, and I can't possibly list all the Windows XP processes that are completely worthless to me, but took up valuable RAM and CPU cycles. Also, I did most of the tweaking without any software that I had to paid for. In fact, I did not use any software at all to optimize my Windows XP...

I know my upcoming rig is powerful, but I want my Windows 7 optimized as I only have 8Gb of RAM that I want to be dedicated to gaming. I do want to not have issues with windows updates, drivers, main functions like disk check and defrag, and I guess I can't list them all, but I hope you get the idea.

You wont need to do any tweaks. SSD = Everything that is needed. Plus 8GB is enough.

An SSD with windows 7 running 500 process's is like an HDD running windows 7 with 20, but still 50x faster.

Well, what about CPU cycles? When idle, my Task Manager shows 0%-1% CPU usage. Even with SSD, a ton of processes can slow things down if they eat up your CPU cycles and also RAM! 8Gb isn't much these days... But I think I found the basic tweaks here - http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...mp-Utilities-*

    --- Post Update ---

Out of those tweaks in that guide, I was concerned if disabling page file on SSD was a good idea with just 8Gb of RAM when playing games?

Don't bother tweaking. The improvement is more psychological than anything.

I have to agree with valtterieranen, unless you're benching, tweaking isn't going to get the gains you got from tweeking a single core CPU on Windows XP. Sure Windows 8 is noticeably faster, but you can't get that speed from tweeking Windows 7, the Kernel is totally different.

Windows 7 will automatically change to suit the power available and lower the resources it uses when you play games in full screen. The most you'd get from tweaking would be 2 or 3 fps when you're already at 60+, just leave it as is, it'll look after itself.

Re: Windows 7 tweaks? Do they exist?

Wow....things have surely changed since Windows XP days... I am still going to remove unwanted startup items, disable running stuff I don't need in the background, and probably just go with BalckViper's "Safe" registry file that disables or changes from Auto to Manual about 19 services. I will definitely disable that user protection thingy though!!!

Also, Creative software will have to leave my startup, ASUS motherboard software, etc. I guess I'll just keep it clean, but won't bother with optimizing that much.

Re: Windows 7 tweaks? Do they exist?

Don't bother turning off services either (unless they are from third party software u don't want etc.)
I only keep an eye on msconfig boot, and run CCleaner with CCenhancer every now and then, thats it
Having less processes will hardly effect performance on todays PCs with windows 7. I'm running 73 processes and CPU is either 0% or 1% at idle

DO NOT DO THAT. You DON'T need to remove startup items or kill any services. Windows 7 is already tweaked "out of the box".

Agreed. You're just creating possible problems down the line with zero performance benefit.

Re: Windows 7 tweaks? Do they exist?

Also tweaking the registry and running registry cleaners is pointless on win 7 unlike on XP as almost everything that messes with the registry in win 7 is a surefire way to get an unbootable PC, I know I tried all my old tricks I used to do with XP and ended up screwing up my install and having to do a restore to fix things.

Like the quote says if its not broke don't fix it.

Saying that though, I still do have a net-stop bat file on my desktop to disable un-necessary services prior to starting games, but I've still got the same 4GB ram I had when I built my PC over 4 years ago and in some games I do think every free memory resource helps.
