Ah good, prices seem to be settling down a bit, 7970 tucking under the 680 (with oced versions the same), now for the 660ti to drop the 7870.

Just look at the retailers stocks, you can get 7970s anywhere, the 680s, on the other hand, are starting to get difficult to find in stock. This isn't down to the 28nm shortage affecting one and not the other either, problems with ramping up the process will affect whoever uses it.
Yes, just like I said, when supply started to outrun demand, the price drops are needed, and used.
Just week or two ago the trend was still apparent - there was cards in stock, but they moved all the time, usually couple brands out of stock and when they got new stock for those, some other brands had run out etc, and GTX680 was already out.
Regarding GTX680 availability, it has been quite well in EU overall, dunno about UK but even in Finland there's always a shop or two with some stock

No one said drop to zero, man. Here is a little lesson - this is a basic as I gets, I will offer this for free, it may help you with life outside of FM too.
Look at this graph:
The intersection of the supply curve and the demand curve (labeled "equilibrium" on the chart) is the price that the market will pay for something. Without changing supply, slide the demand curve to the left - what happens to the equilibrium point?
NOTE: left is <- that way.
Now, as a private exercise apply this to the 79xx cards, given the following scenario:
What happens to the price if competition makes a better card (illud est stealing some of the demand for the highest end card)?
--- Post Update ---
It won't be for a while, still pooping blood. Is there a problem at GlobalFoundaries too? I thought it was just TSMC.
I'm completely aware of how the market works, and how equilibrium is determined, my point was that until now supply wasn't higher than demand, so despite the launch of 680 markets were still ready to pay the original price for 7970 for quite some time - they bought about as much as could be supplied, give or take a few percents
edit:
Now, however, the supply is higher than demand so the price has to be lowered in order to balance it out, wether it's due simply higher amount of cards coming out, or due 680, is irrelevant for the end result.
