    Two points:
    1. I swiped that graph from the Internet (should have sourced it)
    2. It is confusing (I certainly see your point), but it is correct: http://www.eoearth.org/article/Market_dynamics

Look at it this way, if they charged $1M for a 7970, there would be a surplus of them, since only Kaotika would buy one. :D

GTX680 still $499 and out of stock.

    I love price wars.
They keep doing this and I will end up getting one instead of skipping this gen.

Theres no reason to not buy a HD7900 series card. They will last you very long and the compute performance could become useful in future ( read articles about future GFX engine design ).

The 680 is good, but at similar prices now it doesnt really matter which one you get its nice to be in a situation where both products are extremely good.

Well, having reviewed it, and that site, I still think it's wrong - however, as I'm neither a statistician or economist....

    Look at this graph:

The intersection of the supply curve and the demand curve (labeled "equilibrium" on the chart) is the price that the market will pay for something. Without changing supply, slide the demand curve to the left - what happens to the equilibrium point?

NOTE: left is <- that way.

Now, as a private exercise apply this to the 79xx cards, given the following scenario:

What happens to the price if competition makes a better card (illud est stealing some of the demand for the highest end card)?

    --- Post Update ---

It won't be for a while, still pooping blood. Is there a problem at GlobalFoundaries too? I thought it was just TSMC.
Yes but there's a lot of people that foolishly equate an item being in stock at retailers to being an indicator that supply is exceeding demand which is not always the case.

In fact the 7970 could be constantly in stock everywhere and demand could STILL be outstripping supply!

It doesn't work like that, if the cards are in-stock then demand obviously isn't outstripping supply.

I already skip a gen. Time for me to get one. Waiting on GTX 670 - 670 Ti pricing first, and maybe couple of reviews. hehe

Yes it does, if you have 3 weeks of stock at current sales rates but restocking is not due for 5 weeks then your demand is outstripping supply.

If you extrapolate this world wide, the average forum dweller has no way of knowing if AMD are selling more than they can make. This is a moot point now as AMD have dropped prices which tells more of a story.

Also, demand does not equal sales, demand LEADS to sales.

I could want the card, but not be able to afford it for a week or two - that is still demand.
