After the first few years, they achieved great things. We probably wouldn't be seeing post-process "anti-aliasing" on our PCs if it hadn't been for the relatively easy implementation Sony Santa Monica worked into God of War, netting better IQ with lower processing costs.

I get the sense that having easy-to-develop-for hardware has made X360 devs rest on their laurels, because I still don't see much on the platform that compares (technically and aesthetically) to the best the PS3 has been putting out for the past several years.

Actually no it isnt, theres really not much difference coding for a K10, or bulldozer or i7. Thats the nice thing about contemporary x86 CPUs, they contain most of the logic to operate well without the level of optimisation you need for something like cell which has no Out of order execution, no advanced branch prediction, no true cache, and isnt a symmetric multiprocessor.

Unless you were referring to the K10 vs Power-7 or 6, in that case i agree...but i would still question ditching the Power CPUs after so long and so much development and money put into it.

As for the GPUs they really dont make much difference in terms of being any easier to dev for...in fact the 7700 would have been a bit easier to extract max performance out of due to its SIMD architecture. My guess is the only reason they would stick to the older 6670/7670 is so that they can crossfire it with the on-die GPU, that would have made sense if it gave a lot of performance, but it would not perform better than a 7700 and a piledriver CPU both of which are production ready.

    Didn't Pandemic's Saboteur have MLAA in 2009?

While PS3 exclusives look great now, it took them years and the system struggled for a long period of time for worthy exclusives and the console war was over by the time it caught up graphically in marketshare. You can argue PS3 exclusives outshine the 360 now graphically, but for the beginning years it was the other way around. 360 exclusives and particularly multi-platform titles were technically superior to the PS3 for a long time so it pretty much evened out. Just to name a few, titles like Kameo, Dead Rising, Bioshock were graphically superior than anything out on the PS3 during that time and particularly the Gears of War series blew anything out on the PS3 for awhile. Too costly of a move financially so Sony perhaps are taking a more cautious approach this time around for easier architecture. Pros and cons for either direction to take.

I recall the two came out around the same time, but I mistakenly remembered The Saboteur coming out after GoW3. Even so, it didn't use MLAA, but another PP method that netted IQ similar to ATi's early versions of it. They weren't even hyping the effect, because I think it was only noticed later by some pixel counters at B3D or GAF. GOW3, with its superior IQ and fully-disclosed performance impact and methodry had been and continues to be the showcase title for console PPAA.

Nonetheless, The Saboteur on PS3 featured PPAA run through the CELL's PPUs, whereas the X360 version had no AA at all.
