Guns are tools that can be used for so much more than "wiping out degenerates" as you so eloquently put it...

For example, I'm starting work on 1 of 3 new handguns for use in various competitions in the area... much like upgrading and tweaking a computer for gaming

Newer versions can offer more features that make them safer, more reliable, more accurate, require less maintenance, etc...

like the improved trigger (2010 and on) and removal of the failure to eject problems 2008 and on) of a certain gun *hint hint*

For handgun use .4 > .45 (better capacity and recoil while retaining enough oomph), just that Americans really have a hard-on for the .45

It would be nice to have more adjustment options for the grip tough, but it still has some of the best ergonomics.

You ever met anyone who lived after getting shot by a .45? I haven't. That is why people love them so much. [thumbup]

I'm talking one manufactured in June 2011 *cough wheeze* @ least so far as the trigger is concerned... The ejection issues may have been fixed, but it still isn't rated for +P. I also have a massive disliking for the similar Glock trigger... I don't discriminate!

Actually, that depends... my USP .45 has 12rd mags, my USP .40 has 12rd mags, but the frames & slides are different. Now, the Jet Funnel attachment for the .40 & 9 I'm building brings it to 16 and 18rds, respectively. As long as the mags are not single-stack like the majority of 1911s, round capacity for 45s is a non-issue.

The recoil is a toss-up. There are too many factors that play into it. The .40 has a higher muzzle velocity, so when you get into 165-180gr bullet weights, the recoil can be quite snappy. Then factor in barrel length (longer = less flip), slide & frame material (heavier = less flip), where it sits on your hand (The M9 does very well with this, lower = less flip), and also the action type... The Browning setup in the Steyr is very basic, whereas the HK lines are considerably more effective.

As long as you don't go much below a 4" barrel and aren't regularly shooting 230gr +P loads, my go-to is the .45 -- With that said, I own 2 .40s (HK P2000sk and USP), and am looking for a 2nd USP .40 to mod.

    Re: New Steyr pistol

I have heard great things about the Steyr's though I haven't shot one.

Someone say 45??? Well there is only one real 45 and after 100
years of service and still in service today no one can say it isn't the greatest
    fighting hand gun in history.

Here is my new Ed Brown Special Forces (tac driver). Gun is guaranteed to shoot
1 inch or less groups at 50 yards. That's if your as stable as a bench LOL.

The price is crazy and you could buy 5 glocks for the price of one but considering
it's hand fit and tested with 200 rounds before it ships from the factory you
get what you paid for. Plus the 3.5lb trigger is amazing.

    Re: New Steyr pistol

@ Neo; I for one would like to see a 1 inch spread at 50 yards. Never going to happen. Never.... Even resting on a bench. Nice looking gun though.

3.5lbs trigger comes standard on the PPQ.

I for one don't care for a .45, too much recoil to get back on target quickly, especially with a hot round. I find myself using .40 more often these days.
There's a reason most law enforcement agencies have migrated to .40.

My carry round is a 155grain Federal HydraShok. Low recoil, great penetration and expansion.

I'd agree... I've looked @ Ed Browns before. They don't have a guarantee... just that it'll shoot "about 1 1/2" @ 50." No guarantee. Could do better, could do worse; and only get those groups from a mounted shooting vise in an indoor range.

I won't knock the 1911s, since I have a couple Kimbers... but I don't see spending $2500+ for a single handgun that aside from a name doesn't offer much that a cheaper 1911 with some light work could do just as easily.

On a slight sidenote: Having a light trigger pull isn't the end-all. How it breaks and resets, and every movement in between is just as critical if not moreso. I'd rather have an 5-7# trigger that is clean and tight than a sloppy 3.5# mess!

It all boils down to the shooter and the gun, and also the cost of the ammo... For me, I have just as much control over my .45 as I do with my .40s. I tend to gravitate towards the .40 for carry, since combined with some Federal HST +P 180s, it's a high-speed wrecking ball. Of course, in a subcompact, that'll snap your wrist back much more than a .45!
