    Re: Gaming on a Plasma

Hmmm I thought it was because PC's are generally made for 0-255 which used to be 24 bit colour, 8 bits per pixel....

And I was under the impression that for PC playback it is better to set it at 0-255 as it will then play anything, but maybe I am wrong.

For PC playback it's best to pick based primarily on whichever range your TV best handles and secondarily which range your content is designed for. From my experience TV's usually handle 16-235 better. 0-255 is prone to crushing blacks and blowing out whites on TV's. You can always compensate for the lost dynamic range by just setting brightness lower to make 16 look like 0 and contrast higher to make 235 look like 255, then calibrate to 2.2 gamma or whatever your preference is and off you go.

Note that it's important to make sure your video player is displaying the same range as your GPU.

I did manage to load up Uncharted 3 for a while. Gaming on a plasma definitely seems like a different experience - actually a little awkward and hard to explain but I think I just need to get used to it.

Have to find different settings though. Looks completely undersaturated with the two different TV viewing settings I've been using.

flicker schmicker for ****s sake... Why can't they make a decent TV just like back in the day during CRT era. I need to buy a 55" or bigger screen ASAP but all these friggin issues with flicker, ghosting, image retention, input lag and such makes my head spin. The more i read the more confused i get. It's like waiting endlessly for the next big thing...

Believe me after multiple TV returns I feel your pain. The quality control on TV's is not good at all. I kindof wish I just kept the Trusty Ol' Sony 40ex503 CCFL backlight lcd.

That's just the thing, I have owned numerous CRT TVs and never saw the flicker.

Now when I see CRT TVs, I not only see the flicker on all of them but I hear the high pitched whine.

I would be interested to hear more about what you are experiencing, I am not saying your claims aren't valid at all, I am just curious.

    Are you seeing phosphor trails?

Also, the default image settings on most displays are typically fairly poor for image quality and accuracy. It may be worth visiting AVS Forums to see settings people are using as a base and toy around with them.

The only time I have had issues with gaming on HDTVs is on a Samsung DLP I bought back in the day and promptly returned due to input lag, as well as playing some games on various LED backlit LCDs which exhibited the same behavior.

I'm not entirely sure how to explain it. I think it was just a bit of a shock factor coming from LCDs. As in maybe the motion was cleaner but actually felt strange because of that.

Nothing to really explain why it looked completely washed out though.

The settings I've been using actually came straight from AVS forums. Tried d-nice's settings pre luminance patch and Davo-o's settings post-luminance patch. Used the calibration disc they also have at AVS but in fairness their settings were almost spot on from what I could tell. Also did a lot of playing with THX mode, where the options are fairly limited but came highly recommended over there.

    Re: Gaming on a Plasma

There's practically no way to get it good without resorting to service menu. All modes brighter than THX are dynamic and modes darker than THX are too dim. THX can only be calibrated via service menu and even then you'll end up with wrong gamma, for which you'll need a PC to get right.
