in the UK its pretty rare to see a policeman with a gun - my friend got reported by his ex for something (total BS) and 6 armed police certainly made him feel threatened, holstered or not it scared the crap out of him.
maybe you guys feel differently about it, i dont know, but here a gun is for sure threatening if you are being accused of something at the time, it probably didnt help that one of the police was an abject ****** and tried to get a rise out of my friend. we think he wanted something to happen.
No, strutting about the place with a deadly weapon on display, nothing threatening about that at all....
Walking about with a gun on display is making statement, and it's not a good one.
And Americans have an irrational love of guns, despite all the pain they bring.

I went to Spain a while back and got stopped by armed police and it meant nothing at all... because its normal there. Also stopped in France, too, and we knew they were armed = nobody cared.
In the UK, if a policeman is armed and knocks on the door, it means they very likely to consider you to be armed and dangerous - which is kind of scary in its own right.

Guns don't kill people, it's the idiot behind the gun that does....
As an ex Brit (now us citizen), I have whole heartedly subscribed to the right to bear arms and own a few handguns. However I admit that I do feel uncomfortable in the presence of a hick openly showing his hand gun in public.
The American laws are ridiculous when it comes to guns, take Nevada for example, it is perfectly legal for ANYONE with a registered gun to wear it in public in full view. However if that same gun becomes partially covered with a shirt tail or jacket it is now considered a concealed weapon and unless the individual has a concealed license he can be arrested!! Daft laws if you ask me. When the Rodeo is in town I can go down to the las vegas strip and see plenty of cowboys wearing their guns in public. Most of them are so liquored up who know what they are capable of with loaded weapons!
as a brit, i have an irrational love of guns, but having a license right now is not happening (renting).
i'd like a 44 lever action so could use it on the hundreds of empty pistol ranges we still have around the place.
i do think people here should be able to own pistols / etc, but if it ever happens i'm going abroad for a year or so until all the idiots have shot each other (it would happen). it would solve the chav problem in one stroke.
