Re: Windows 8 consumer preview to be revealed tomorrow.

So I'm having an issue with the W8 CP on my Dell XPS 1530 notebook as noted above.

When I get the interruptions, it's apparently due to a spike in latency. Anyone else experiencing this?

EDIT: After running Latency Monitor it would appear that NDIS.sys is partly the culprit. Disabling Ethernet/USB/DVD drive in BIOS reduced the latency a bit, and disabling WIFI removed it entirely.

Highest DPC routine execution time (µs): 24198.7417
Driver with highest DPC routine execution time: ndis.sys - NDIS 6.30 driver, Microsoft Corporation

Highest reported total DPC routine time (%): 1.8140
Driver with highest DPC total execution time: rspLLL64.sys - Resplendence Latency Monitoring and Auxiliary Kernel Library, Resplendence Software Projects Sp.

Total time spent in DPCs (%) 2.9805

DPC count (execution time 250-500 µs): 0

DPC count (execution time 2000-3999 µs): 3
DPC count (execution time >=4000 µs): 0

Have only had time to do one quick one using AvP DX11 on maximum settings (1920x1200):

    Windows 8 - 62.7fps
    Windows 7 - 61.2fps

So looks like it could be a reasonable platform for gaming Will try some more later if get any spare time

Update: Games did not work, so have formatted it off my system, and gone back to Windows 7.

Hopefully they sell it cheap again to students. Only way that I will get it.

I may try out this preview, but in no rush atm. We use XP at work and I forgot how much I liked that OS.

Now will it be worth the upgrade from 7? Vista wasn't so much worth the upgrade from XP, only Win7 made the upgrade worth it. Will Win8 be worth the upgrade from 7 or will it be a just wait for the next Windows, or at least for the first service pack?

Ya that's basically how I feel about it right now too. Keeping in mind I've throughly enjoyed the changes Vista and 7 have brought.

For me, it'll come down to real-world performance. If it's the same as Windows 7, forget it.

It is considerably faster, especially when navigating core windows.

After running 8 beta on my other PC since it was released the system indeed does seem faster overall than Windows 7 did. Boots up real quick too!

I'd love to try this thing on an SSD, but I probably won't upgrade my main desktop until later versions, we'll see.

Re: Windows 8 consumer preview to be revealed tomorrow.

Anybody else using an Xonar sound card on Window's 8? My Xonar Essence ST isn't loading the console at all. I can install the drivers and get sound, but you can't bring up the console to change the settings. I can't find a work around either...

Other than the sound card issue, I like the OS quite a bit. Searching for everything, WinKey + type, and getting use to the shortcuts, it seems more power-user friendly than I would have imagined.

I've been using it for about 3 weeks now and I must say you are correct. Now only is it snappier but file transfers are amazingly fast. I transferred 1GB file from desktop to laptop (using my existing gigabit router and CAT6 cables) and it moved so fast, I thought it didn't. I did a double take.
