Re: It will cost you around $870 to get Mass Effect 3's DLC

This article points out why you shouldn't worry about the silly day one DLC and will likely be a complete waste of money.

    http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/mass-effect-3/1219344p1.html

This week, a few spoilery details leaked out regarding Mass Effect 3's inevitable day-one DLC, and those details have a few people flipping their proverbial biscuits. BioWare's responded to the accusations that resources were diverted from ME3's development to create DLC, saying that this content was developed by a separate team, but however you feel about that issue I can't help but feel that there's a whole lot of wild overreaction going on here on the story angle. I'd encourage all y'all to relax a little and at the very least wait until we know more before raging against EA and BioWare. Here's why.

The main point of contention with this particular piece of DLC is that it includes (Final warning! Spoiler!) a Prothean character who can join up with Shepard as a crewmember. That character's very existence is a ginormous revelation, since from the beginning of the Mass Effect saga Protheans were believed to be extinct, wiped out by the Reapers millennia ago. It's understandable that ME story devotees would be upset that their return would be separated from the main game and held hostage for $10.

Here's the thing, though: we don't know that the Prothean companion is the only Prothean in Mass Effect 3. In fact, when you think about it, that'd make no sense whatsoever. A major event like the return of the Protheans isn't something you can just tack on without completely screwing up the story, and unless the DLC adds a new line of "Holy s---, a Prothean!" dialogue to every single character you speak to, it'd be totally awkward and broken. It'd be like walking up to someone with your pet pterodactyl on a leash and them not noticing anything weird. The only way this can possibly work is if the revelation of the existence of at least one living Prothean is part of the main game's story.

Historically, BioWare's writers have demonstrated that they're smart enough to know that. And if they're not, you'd be better of playing ME3 without this story-breaking DLC, and treating it like sweepings from the cutting-room floor that are best left there. We'll be sure to let you know what we think of it in our review.

Without completely screwing up the story? But they already did that!

Protheans have gone from being tentacle faced monsters to bug people.

Re: It will cost you around $870 to get Mass Effect 3's DLC

DLC sucks and I will never support it, so yes the OP has a point- This crap needs to stop.

However, the title and subsequent posting are a bit misleading. Theres a difference between asthetic DLC, Story expansion DLC and Merchandise. Merchandise is fine by me, people who want to purchase toys/bags etc, thats thier choice. People who want to purchase aesthic DLC with different outfits and guns with different pixels on the screen, go ahead! But story DLC....that should be included with the box, OR be released at a latter date for a resonable price/content ratio. I would argue that expansion packs are perfectly fine and these days it makes no sense to box up stuff like that, its much easier to sell it and download it as DLC. A great example of good DLC- Missing Link, Awakening etc.

If its done the right way= good thing. If its done like many do it nowdays= bad thing.

When you touch that prothean artifact in the first game they give you a flash of this

    Not the best screenshot.

Then in the second game when you have the prothean flashback (or when you just shoot the crap out of them) the picture was edited into:

You should stop listening to what others have said, they obviously can't even follow the storyline. The Prothean in the 2nd game is what they look like now, millions upon millions of years later, and after being made into armoured slaves by The Reapers. Just like the Reapers turn humans into Husks, they turned the Protheans into the form we see today.

Uh-uh. Explain this to me. Why is the prothean character in Mass Effect 3 who has been in stasis from BEFORE the reaper attack and IS NOT INDOCTRINATED, look like the bug and not the squid face?

And no its not millions of years, it was 50,000 years ago that they vanished. (Both of these points from the ME wiki on protheans).

    It is called Retconning.

Thank god other game series don't do that and are 100% bulletproof when it comes to the story.

    I agree with this statement.

If everyone does it, it is fine. Hurrah!

Exactly. So because other stories are badly written, it is fine for this one to be?
