Opinion: Faulty LCD or just a crappy VA panel?

Right, I bought a BenQ EW2730V 27" LED screen. I read good reviews about it having good colour reproduction, black levels and a decent response time. Now for reference, I currently use an Acer 26" MVA panel LCD.

Problem is the first unit I got had really bad smearing/ghosting on coloured/grey backgrounds. If you move a white block on a black background or black block on white it seems OK (although not great) but as soon as you put anything on a grey or coloured background you get smearing/ghosting as bad as anything I've seen. It's like it's got a 50ms+ response time.

I had an exchange of the unit today, but have exactly the same problem. I have noted that the replacement unit has the same manufacturing date as my first one and is only 3 digits different in serial number, so I'm thinking batch fault?

Anyway, none of the reviews I've read have said anything worse than "slight inverse ghosting", nothing approaching the severe smearing & blurring I'm seeing.

Linked is a video taken from my mobile @ 720p (sorry for the crap quality). I put my old Acer and new BenQ side by side, both on DVI connections. Look at the DS9 pylons on the Star Trek Online Launcher, it's not as obvious as viewing it directly but you should be able to see the smearing I'm on about.

I recommend watching at 720p and full screen.

Currently downloading a samsung smearing test video just to get something clearer to test on.

    http://www.prad.de/new/monitore/test...q-ew2730v.html

It has been tested and proven not worth it because of the crappy response time causing the blur (google translate it).

I can only repeat that if a monitor is not tested by prad.de or digitalversus.com you do not touch it. If it is tested and they found a flaw you do not touch it, EVER.

Looking at the images they've shown, I'm pretty certain it's a fault. The level of bluring they experienced is much lower than what I'm seeing. I'm seeing 1-2 inch long trails behind moving objects.

VA panels = good black levels and contrast but rubbish backlight bleed and response time (bit of a generalisation but pretty much true)

Keep in mind that the Acer and BenQ are both VA panels.

Am 99% certain this is a fault.

I've never had the chance to play around with a VA monitor, but I've seen many VA TV's suffer from this black trailing, black dragging, black smearing... whatever you want to call it. I've never confirmed any VA panel to not be affected by this.

LOL the amount of black blur in those videos is ridiculous.... That cannot be in spec! If it is not a fault then that is appalingly bad and I would get a refund asap! I have never seen anything anywhere near that bad.... I have seen it to a small extent but nothing like that! Never been very impressed with BenQ products personally.

Re: Opinion: Faulty LCD or just a crappy VA panel?

I am pretty convinced this is a fault. I mean, I can't see a single reviewer giving a screen with this level of smearing even a single star, yet every review I've seen in between 3 & 5 star ratings. "Some mild inverse ghosting" is about the worst I've heard from this screen.

    Example:

    http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/monit...8/benq-ew2730v

We're pleased to say that while early VA monitors have suffered from complaints of poor response times, the EW2730V's 8ms seems to be right. Playing games we noticed no signs of ghosting or other glitches.
Now I can't see what I'm seeing is typical since gaming is a huge blurry mess right now, every moving object is followed by an inch long trail.

Also to say again, my other screen is an Acer al2623w, which was released in 2007 to mediocre reviews. It uses an old MVA panel as opposed to a new AMVA in the BenQ, I just cannot imagine the BenQ could be THAT much worse.

Is the Pixel Overdrive option enabled for the BenQ? Sometimes it's not enabled by default.

Yep, tried it in all 3 of it's available settings without any effect.
