IE, how to enter a port number in the adres field.

Trying to use IE to connect to a DVR, But since that DVR has it webviewer on port 88 i have to add that to the adres:

    xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:88

Works like a charm in Chrome but since the DVR uses ActiveX i have to use IE.
Thing is that IE just wont accept that format and throws me to Bing [cursing]

Anyone know how to add a port number in IE9?

That should work. Might be worth manually entering the http:// or https:// at the beginning as i've had that stop this working before.

That did the trick (adding the http://)
    Thanks

edit - crazy, even my creaky old IE emulator from 2009 knows to prefill HTTP:// on 192.168.0.1:80 while its emulating IE6.

That's because port 80 implies HTTP the same was that port 443 implies HTTPS. The problem arises when you use a port that the computer is not expecting such as 88 in this case. The browser has no idea how to talk to port 88 so you have to tell it what to do.

if im being dumb as hell blame it on no sleep for two days...

i agree with you about non standard ports - i dont know how browsers "guess" what to do with them.

i used port 80 as an example of a standard port, it looked to me like IE9 can't handle even known ports, which was suprising.

do you find the same with IE9? maybe my install is b0rked.

Re: IE, how to enter a port number in the adres field.

Going to Bing was actually the "right" thing to do, in that a protocol was not selected.

If you type "www.google.com", the protocol (HTTP) and the standard port for that protocol (80) are assumed. The IP layer has 6 byte addressing (in IPv4), so an HTTP packet gets sent to the 4 bytes that represent the IP address for google.com, plus 2 bytes that represent 80.

If you only specify a port, but not a protocol, how does the browser know that you actually want HTTPS, FTP or whatever else IE can do? AFAIK, You can have a webserver listening to any port number that you want. This means FTP at port 80, HTTP at 443, HTTPS at 60000 are all valid requests.

I am actually surprised that Microsoft does not just append HTTP and port 80 to every string typed in the address. That seems like the Microsoft way.

You'd have thought IE would fall back and automatically select HTTP when no protocol is selected. I'm sure this was the case previously.

    I suppose.

I was joking on MS, in this regard, if you type: "https://www.google.com:443" MS would assume "http://https://www.google.com:443:80" :D

you sure can, good thing to do as well for any services that could potentially be hacked SFTP/SSH/etc

edit - best port for FTP is "no port at all" :P
