Asus Transformer Prime

I picked up a Prime yesterday and have been very impressed with it so far. After using the Xoom for as long as I did I was surprised how much better ICS runs a tablet with some real grunt.

So far it's been fantastic to use.

Almost like Honeycomb was just a preview.

ICS packs in a lot of huge but subtle changes for tablets. Kudos to ASUS for delivering it quickly and almost entirely unmolested. The few changes they made have been excellent and unobtrusive. I liked my original Transformer with Honeycomb but I was blown away by how much it was improved by the ICS upgrade. It's faster, everything is more easily accessible, the battery lasts longer, the Chrome Beta is total win on the tablet-sized screen.

Sharp contrast to the ICS upgrade on my Galaxy SII, which I have generally disliked. Battery life has been worse, the phone has been occasionally slower, Chrome is just no good on a screen this size. I so dislike what Samsung has done to ICS that I am thinking of deploying a custom ROM.

My Transformer came running ICS and received the latest OTA update on the day of its release. Even more efficient than my Galaxy Nexus with regards to swift updates.

Straight out of Kies. It's the official release of 4.0.3 for the i9100.

EDIT: One thing I should add. Fast dormancy was enabled by default on this build and I think it was a contributing factor to my battery being absolutely crushed. You'd do nothing with the phone at all - screen off, WiFi off and completely idle - and it was down 20% in an hour. I disabled fast dormancy and the battery life is vastly better than it was before, but still worse than it was on Gingerbread.

Samsung has screwed something up.

You know what else? That stupid Vlingo app appears all the time when you hit the home button. It's only supposed to come up on a double click of the button but now it's constantly popping up. I wish I could uninstall it. I guess Samsung screwed up debounce on the button or something because it's interpreting single clicks as double. I wouldn't even mind if the app was half way to useful but it's a total pile of crap. Call so-and-so. Call so-and-so. Call so-and-so... Oh f-off. I'll go to contacts and do it myself.

Edit im not using anymore battery than before either? well maybe a little but nothing as drastic as yourself.

Having had an iPad 2 and now a Transformer Prime (and iPad 3), this is simply not true.

I have actually been pretty underwhelmed by its performance to be perfectly honest.

If you were to compare the two solely on running one intensive app, I would give it to the Prime for raw horsepower but when browsing, switching between apps, etc. the iPad 2/3 smokes it.

I have heard from Chaz who pointed me to a thread on XDA as well but it seems ASUS has botched the browser performance and it shows. The stock browser and Chrome stop responding every now and then. (Mainly when jumping back to it from another app but this does not happen on my phone.) Even when one, maybe two apps are in the background, and I go to update an app, it just sits there for 10 seconds or so before it continues on. Overall just an inconsistent experience regarding performance.

The TF Prime is very thin and light but I am underwhelmed by the lack of polish and the screen looks washed out compared to higher end LCDs and AMOLED displays. Taking a photo on it and seeing that photo on it's screen and then bringing the photo over to my computer, iPad, or phone, you can see a drastic difference in color reproduction.

I am running a custom ROM and kernel on my Galaxy Nexus and it (and the iPad) runs circles around the TF for general use. However, if I wanted to get some gaming in with a controller attached, the TF is king.

Overall, it is my favorite Android tablet by a long shot and I am enjoying tinkering with it, I just think Asus' additions and crappy kernel and ROM bring it down, which is unfortunate because it is good hardware.

The Prime has the Super IPS+, not sure what you mean by higher end LCD as that's about as high end as it gets. Only screen I'd take over it is Sammy's SAMOLED.

Do remember that the Prime can do Flash though, so it will always win browsing experience in my books heh heh.

Does anybody have the TF300 at all? I'm interested on what people think of that.

The screen I am on right now on the Prime is very underwhelming compared to the iPad 2 and third gen iPad. It has a green push and is generally underwhelming.

People still go to Flash sites?
