looks like hardware sound will be back with windows 8
If it's still in use, I wouldn't notice. I forgot that I'm not running sound through my onboard X-fi anymore, but instead through my GPU over HDMI. I don't care for the stupid "trapped at the bottom of a well" echo effects that EAX applies to games, anyway.
I would like to see your source for this as I am now interested in windows 8.
There is one game in particular which used EAX effects very well: FEAR1. Aside from that, not many games used EAX or implemented it very well. I just hope microsoft would re-add hardware support for directsound so I don't have to use loopholes to get a working sound system.

which is using

nothing though about Dirctsound being hardware accelerated , but you can bet creative labs will be working on something - since ALchemy reroutes suitable sound through OpenAL to hardware for acceleration
(done some reading around since i posted the thread)
Apparently quite a few games still use it. Like Dirt 2 and 3, F1 2010/11, all the Stalker games, Killing Floor, Bioshock games and i'm sure others too.
