actually. no one will ever know the answer to this question, because there are no heavenly bodies nearby that could possibly harbour intelligent life.

there is absolutely zero possibilty of us ever travelling fast enough to reach habitable planetary systems outside out solar system. and i mean absolutely zero. in fact, the chances are probably less than zero.

IMO that is a more ignorant statement then saying something like "it is possible aliens have visited us in the past"....

There are a lot of extremely intelligent people that think that interdimensional travel or similar are a possibility and humans are just scratching the surface of quantum physics etc... I mean it was only in the last 50 years or so of the whole time humans have been about that we have even been using computers... who knows what it will be like in 10000 years (if we havnt nuked each other to extinction by then) Maybe it is all a load of theories which will never turn into anything but it is very ignorant to make blanket black and white statements like "THERE IS ZERO CHANCE".. Or are you secretly a quantum physicist?

Well, i know what you mean, but please look at the evidence. We can't even go to the Moon anymore. We can't afford it. Have you any idea how much it would cost to even contemplate sending a human crew to Mars?

Mars... this is one of the nearest planets to us and we still can't do it.

Now, lets think about travelling several light years. With current technology, this will take so long that the people originally on the spaceship would be dead by the time their children/grandchildren/greatgrandhildren got there.

I know of no current or future technology that will allow humans to visit other solar systems.

The only thing that people can speculate about is teleportation or wormholes etc. These things have never been proven to exist beyond some speculative theories.

So, beyond fanciful notions, yes, I stick by my original comment that the chances of us encountering alien civilisation are zero

In physics you should never say there is a 0 chance of anything imo.
Its as if it is there for the sole pourpose of being learnt. Its quite somthing.

Will we ever reach a point where we can say "yes we know physics now. All of it. Everything about everything and how it all works." I dont think so somehow. Its amazing really. Seems like there will be endless posibilitys. Just look how far we have come in 150 years. That is incredible in its self.

Imagine 1000 years from now or even 1million ???? You cant. Its imposbile. Mad aint it ?

what i find strange is that humans seemed to have learned the vast majority of current knowledge about physics only in the last couple of hundred years.

why is this?

humans have been about for maybe hundreds of thousands of years. why have we only started to learn these things in the last little while?

is it to do with the fact that we have harnessed fossil fuels to give us the energy required to deal with these questions and problems?

if it is, then if we do not secure an alternative to fossil fuels, then the future will be less technologically advanced that the present. this is guaranteed.

there is no point in having advanced technological equipment if you don't have the energy to run it.

Mmm humans have been on earth for about 200,000 years and they started to become civilised about 70,000 years ago.... Recent history goes back about 3000 years and it is only in the last 100 years that we have suddently started getting loads of technology advancements such as cars, computers etc.... I mean even 15 years ago a mobile phone looked like a brick now it has video camera, internet access etc.... If humans dont blow each other up and are around for another 5000 years imagine what might be discovered if we continue at the rate of development of the last 100 years..

You couldn't possibly know what knowledge of physics there is yet unlocked, just like people 100 years ago couldn't imagine many things we know now.

Also the reason we cant go to the moon or mars is because all money is currently spent on military and war! If there was not such a infatuation with war and blowing stuff up then we would probably have been to mars by now!
