Could Win turn off a hard disk while Firefox is downloading to it?

On my PC, I have an SSD as the boot drive and I have a rotary hard drive E: for file storage. On the SSD I have Win 7 and Firefox installed. I have specified my downloads folder for Firefox be on E:. Is it possible if I boot into windows, launch firefox, and then begin downloading a large file that takes several hours to download and I leave the computer idling while downloading, that Windows will turn off the E: drive after some time, causing the firefox download to fail?

The reason I ask is that i have had a lot of downloads that have just stopped in the middle of the download. This happens for no reason as I don't lose internet connection but the download just stops and I have to restart it and I'm wondering if this is happening because Windows turns the drive off.

Why are you turning off you HDD in the first place? The option is there to save power which you obviously are not concerned with. Constantly turning on/off a drive is worse then leaving the drive on. And if it were a laptop you still would have different profiles for when it's plugged in versus on battery.

Firefox can't handle files larger than 2GB.

I've downloaded Linux Distros and Windows ISOs through Firefox without issue and some of them are 4.7GB DVD images.

I believe it turns off automatically. Sometimes I will come back to my PC and click around in firefox and there will be a second or two of delay before anything happens and I can hear the disk spinning up.

As I just said you can go into power options and turn that off.

Control panel > Power Settings > Advanced Settings > Hard Disk > Turn off disk after < >
