    Legal assistance - URGENT

    Hi Guys...

Some of you may remember a post I made recently about my dad being stuck in and getting home from the crisis in Libya, working as a desert oil worker.

After a few weeks of being home, my dad was told he had lost his job and wouldn't be returning to Libya. He has now managed to get a new job in Iraq and is now working there.

My parents received a letter from Barclays today, saying, in no uncertain terms, their 4 joint bank accounts are to be closed.

"The reason behind this decision incorporates numerous factors from account conduct to commercial assessment. While we are unable to explain the mechanics of our decision, please understand - this has not been taken lightly, lastly we will not be prepared to offer you any new banking services."

We are talking 30 years of clean sheet banking, nothing dodgy going on, and we can only nail it down to thinking it's something to do with Libya, as Barclays have a history of this behaviour in regards to US anti-terror laws (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...-accounts.html).

The bank will not disclose any information after numerous phone calls and visits in person, and suggest they find a new bank...

What the hell guys? Anyone out there that could offer any insight as to what is going on, or any advice as to what can be done to try and fix, this situation? (Bearing in mind he is no longer employed by a Libyan company, now a British company paid in US dollars...

    Thanks...

An internet tech forum is the last place you should be seeking advice. Seek professional assistance in a lawyer as soon as possible. They are the ones most equipped to handle this situation or at the very least may be able to help you seek assistance through the various correct channels. Doing anything other than this would seem futile. Im sorry for your troubles but a lawyer is certainly the best place to go for an urgent legal question.

They are entitled to refuse your business. Just open a new account instead.

Are they just closing your accounts or freezing your assets in the accounts?

But the problem is, is that it might not be that simple. It depends what, if anything, Barclays do to his credit report. Having a bank close your accounts with immediate effect may mean other banks will be unwilling to offer an account, or maybe not a decent account but one of their lower end accounts.

I would make sure you check with experian to see if it affects your credit rating at all and if anything is added, then you need to escalate via the Financial Services watchdog or whatever it's called these days.

It just has to do with libya and the fact they are trying to limit money that Ghadaffi can get a hold of. In effect, with NATO/EU coordination banks are shutting down Libya related accounts. Your dad is an oil man, like many, many expats/workers from there he innocently came by this hardship. Since they are closing the account do to Libya, and not lack of funds/misappropriation in no way should it effect his credit score. It is one thing to have a credit card shut you down (that does effect your score). But you could switch banks 50 times and it not effect your credit. This is unfortunately just a pain in the ass associated with taking oil from despots. Find a new account, other banks shouldn't give you any problems. If they do, that is when you need a lawyer.

yeah, as I am pretty sure NATO/EU are not targeting his father, so if you could learn to read and then learn the meaning of the word comprehend then maybe you would discover that you are not intelligent enough to be in this conversation. He, the OP's father is a worker that is having his accounts closed because the EU/NATO wants all accounts closed that have received wired transfers from Libya/money from Libya. It is a blanket move that effects mostly innocent people that are not the target of such a move. But it is really nothing more than a hassle, so there is really not much to bitch about.
