Is there a performance hit using a Hackintosh?

Not sure if this is possible (or allowed to be discussed) but my friend is starting a film-making type course in February and has been told that they use Final Cut pretty much exclusively.

She needs a new laptop anyway and asked me what the best bang-for-buck to get was, thats when I realised that Final Cut only works on Mac's. To which she wasn't very happy due to not liking how expensive they are compared to similarly specced PC's/Laptops and also not being a fan of the OS but she's going to need this program.

I know that she's more than likely going to have to go down the Mac route but the final idea I had was to get a decent laptop and get it to dual boot with OSX just for when she needs to use the program.

Firstly, will this work at all! and secondly, if it does work will there be any performance hit meaning it'll need better specs to run the same.

I read somewhere (one of the hackos sites) some guy claiming his framerates in wow or something went up after he set up Mac os...I'm in the process of setting up my first two hackintosh's as we speak.

Unless she really likes configuring computers and then fixing them when they go wrong, I wouldn't recommend a Hackintosh. I have used Final Cut on a Hackintosh and while it did work well, it took me a long time to get it that way.

Hmmm, yeah I assumed it would be a bit of a ballache. Was it fairly stable once it was eventually up and running?

Like I said it was just an idea and would give me an excuse to play around with something I've not tried before

Yeah it was fairly stable once I had got most of the initial problems solved. But how stable you get it will depend largely on the hardware you choose in the first place and how compatible it is with OS X.

I triedcreating a hackintosh 2 years ago on old hardware (xp2500+ 1gb ram built in nv6100) and apart from the slow-ish boot up time, everything performed great if not evrn better than macs with equal parts.. And thats 2 years ago, hackintoshing has progressed ALOT since then. It's all about picking the right distro for the specs that you have. I tried again using a virtualmachine some months ago and even then it performed well.
