    Windows Service Tweaking

So i've been getting to grips with Win 7 after dual booting with XP since one of the betas, to be honest i've still tended to use XP most of the time, until more recently, and now i've dropped XP altogether and i'm happy and confident enough to go with Win 7 permanently, so i began looking into a few tweaks to tune it up, mainly the services.

Which is when i stumbled across this handy little utility, that has predefined settings for disabling services in XP, Vista and Windows 7, it can also revert back to default settings should the need arise. Nifty.

Blackviper.com is also a very good site if you want to get a bit more hands on and do some manual fine tuning.

Disabling services gains nothing, other than a slight increase in boot time. We are on Windows 7, not XP.

    Re: Windows Service Tweaking

Thanks for your input, but i disagree, Win 7 hasn't suddenly managed to run all that extra pointless bloat for free, it takes up memory, cpu cycles, creates extra threads and means more crap running in the background that needn't be there. Win 7 needs optimising just as badly as XP or Vista did and my desktop feels much snappier now because of it and certainly doesn't increase boot times, unless you are silly enough to disable helpful services like superfetch.

    Re: Windows Service Tweaking

I tried the application even knowing my own service tweaks are far more "advanced" than what the software has to offer, so I made a back up of my services via its backup feature and clicked on advance.. rebooted the machine and got a BSOD " IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL" mid way the desktop was loading my start up items.. ( Nod32 and my Logitech G15v2 drivers ) so I rebooted once more and still got the BSOD.. thinking that something must have been wrong with my bios.. i restarted and chose returned my OC to stock and still got a BSOD.. third time is a charm! so I decided to boot into safe mode and used the restore function.. restored my OC and rebooted just fine.

Yikes, that doesn't sound good at all, i tested out all three pre-defined settings and never noticed a big difference between them anyway tbh, certainly never BSOD' on me, this was on Win7 Ultimate 64. Good job you backed them up i guess.

I just thought it was a convenient starting point for those unsure of tweaking them manually, although i still ended up going through them manually to check what it disabled and what i knew didn't need to be running anyway. [rofl]

Gotta play safe when tweaking services
I stick with Blackviper's guide, no problem so far
