    I must be missing something.
Maybe to notice that you are added on my budys list.

Depends what you are upgrading from. The 5850 and 5870 are great cards, supply is finally good and the prices become normal.

Most people forget that there was a time not so long ago where the fastest single chip cards were 600 $ and consumed a massive amount of power with the corresponding heat output.

It is luxury in any business to reject cash for top (example produced & paper launched) product.

and why does that remind me of the `available on launch date` GTX295`s.... oh wait.....

I don't think they feel threatened by Fermi, because they're making so much more profit on their own stuff. Same as last gen when NV had parts that were marginally faster, but cost so much more to produce.
X1800 to x1900 really a huge change though, it was more a partial change, which is what AMD/Ati tend to do, rather than take one large step they change their architecture more gradually, over a few generations.

As for Fermi, of course they feel threatened, what does it matter if AMD make more profit per chip? That's just marketing BS that gets spewed when they can't compete on performance, at the end of the day, their chips being cheaper to manufacture doesn't impact or stop nVidia from taking back market share, they already know that it looks like nv have real winner on their hands with Fermi, they also know that nv will price match them in every area, so they are bound to be a little worried, as we've already seen, just because their chips are cheaper, that doesn't mean they'll pass the savings onto us, it just means more profit for them.

Sure they are hard to get but they do exist and are out there.

    Fermi was a paper launch

more profit per chip is not marketing garbage... it's good business to be able to sell your product at a lower price when the competition comes out with an answer and still make profit off of the reduced price... A lot of people buy products based on value (price/performance ratio)... Bargain hunters do this with everything...

There are different business models for different markets. Some are high volume, low margin, some are low volume, high margin. The bottom line is the what matters at the end of the day... nVidia will be fine.

Re: AMD CEO: next gen Radeons on track for H2/10

Being blinded by bias I can understand that the usual offenders decided to come in this thread and try to derail with negative comments. It's a shame, or should I say sham? nVidia's marketing budget is wide though... and i'm begining to see that some of that budget is being worn on the sleeves of a few of the high rate posters in this forum.

    /rant off

The announcement is likely geared to try and take some steam outta nVidia's engines. All the popular tech sites have their Fermi details out and i'm sure AMD is trying to get some added facetime as well. Will be interesting to see if it's just a general bump in speeds or if the new Radeons will be something more. With the 5850 and 5870 providing so much speed already, only thing i'm waiting for is performance numbers from some games that fully take advantage of DX11 to see how they handle it.

I know DX11 is a break from the train of thought with DX10, but when DX10 came out it crushed alll the new DX10 parts. I don't think the same will happen with DX11, but if so, the New Radeon refreshes will be all the more welcomed.
