My Toshiba is 5 1/2 years old and still going strong. Of course the performance isn't ground breaking these days, but I pretty much only use it for web browsing, watching DVDs, and MS Office stuff... but it it still works. [thumbup]
I've had an ASUS for about 2 and half years. I've swapped CPU, Memory, and hard drive though. A friend has had his ASUS for over 3 now. I'd recommend them.
Edit: Between the two, I like the ASUS better. The 4650 is better than the GT 230m, right? Also, the ASUS has a bigger, faster hard drive. Anything over 15.4" in a laptop is too big IMO. If you don't plan on being too mobile, 16" is fine. The way I see it, you can always connect a monitor if you want a bigger screen.

Acers lately are having a lot of problems though, we used to push them put we experienced too many screen problems with the latest 5000 series so we mostly push toshiba now along with a few asus.
