tweak or cheat?

Hi,

I saw in another forum that this user which is currently holding the #1 spot in PCmark05 is replacing Internet Explorer with another browser and using a multithreaded encoder instead of WIndos Media Encoder. DO we have to keep Windows Media encoder as the default encoder or can we repalce it? As much as it makes sese to replace Windows Explorer - I am not sure if this benchmark turns into something else.
Would love to find out what Futuremark's stance is on that.

I'm not the official guy to say anything on this, but in my opinion if you tamper with the benchmark (which includes modifying/changing codecs etc), the result you get is not a valid one for comparisons.

I would agree with that opinion. Looking forward to what the official statement will be and if the results wil be removed or not [thumbup]

Honestly it is no different the people using lod cheats, leaving their monitors off, etc. There scores still stand all through out all the benchmarks. Just bad to see stuff like this happen on benchmarks.

But him swapping out a player sounds like a good deal though, perhaps a newer player that supports dual/quad cores would make a nice patch for it though.

AFAIK, these results will be purged as cheats.

I'm not sure if ORB can be adjusted to detect this type of cheating automatically or if it would require a PCMark 05 patch. In any case, we'll accept reports of scores in the ORB that pass validation but have been obtained through cheating. They'll be reviewed and removed as appropriate.

no encoders or browsers have been replaced in those results, valiid results using legal tweaking techniques, no different than a change of LOD or optimizing a system for superpi
