Do laser or regular optical mice work better on on less than ideal surfaces

Do laser or regular optical mice work better on on less than ideal surfaces i.e. uneven surfaces e.g. when using the mouse on your knee etc.

Laser tracks way better on my bare desktop. The optical skips and changes directions.

I've never bothered comparing, just use the mouse on a proper surface. Preferably a gaming mousepad.

Laser works better, by a long way.

I had a G7 to replace my MX700 and have to admit, accuracy is vastly improved and it works on my bare desktop, where the MX700 wouldn't.

Eats the batterys though. Good thing there is a spare battery to charge while I'm using the other.[thumbup]
